It’s called a step-through frame, and the origin of the step-through frame is that it allowed women to ride in dresses. That’s it. It was all about the dress.
They’re going the way of the dodo. Women’s (real) off-road bikes and road bikes now use the more standard diamond frame. Beach cruisers and hybrids are about the only modern bikes available in a step-through frame.
Okay...got it.. BTW, I knew this...I am operating from a 5 decade memory of bikes then and commenting on what I thought about it then. Regardless, it still looks like a traditional girls bike.
