Competing against the worlds most breathtaking locales, the Dead Sea is just three months away from potentially being named one of the worlds seven natural wonders as part of the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition. The online voting contest seeking to name seven natural wonders of the world is years in the making and is set to finish on November 11, 2011.
The organizers want to have 1 billion votes cast on their website, www.new7wonders.com. The current results are confidential, but Israels Tourism Ministry said they feel the Dead Sea is doing well so far, even if they dont know whether it is currently in the top seven or not

I think this might be the first “Natural Wonder of the World” awarded posthumously.
A whole sea? That’s kinda tacky. What’s next, planet Earth?
But they didn't get there in time, the Dead Sea is dead, and the world now calls it a Wonder. Just goes to show that things carry on just fine without the intervention of the do-gooders.
Right after its declaration, the U.N. will demand the right to govern it. Just wait and see.
There is stiff competition as J-Lo’s butt is also in serious contention as a natural wonder.
yes, the competition stiffens at the mention of that particular wonder...
I’ve been there. Interesting but natural wonder, not a chance.
It is so salty that if you get it in your eye you have to get out of the water and wash the salt out. I had a picture of me floating in the Dead Sea that is much like the one below. Alas, it is lost. But as you can see, that extra salt makes the water so heavy you can almost walk on it.
I'm sure you guys all remember what Archimedes discovered: the upward force on a floating body is equal to the weight of the displaced liquid. That's why you float higher in the Dead Sea - the water is heavier due to the large salt concentration so you don't have to displace as much water to stay afloat.
Here is how Archimedes put it:
Archimedes quote: Any floating object displaces its own weight of fluid.

EUREKA!
This exclamation is most famously attributed to the ancient Greek scholar Archimedes; he reportedly proclaimed “Eureka!” when he stepped into a bath and noticed that the water level rosehe suddenly understood that the volume of water displaced must be equal to the volume of the part of his body he had submerged. This meant that the volume of irregular objects could be measured with precision, a previously intractable problem. He is said to have been so eager to share his realisation that he leapt out of his bathtub and ran through the streets of Syracuse naked.

That is hilarious.
Madaba Mosaic Map The Dead Sea or The Salt Sea
Salt, also Pitch Lake, also the Dead Sea, is what the mosaicist writes in the caption, quoting the Onomasticon of Eusebius who had in turn drawn upon the biblical text where the Dead Sea is also called the Sea of Marabah and Eastern Sea to distinguish it from the West Sea or Mediterranean. In greco-roman times it was known as the Pitch Sea because of the bitumen that was extracted from it. During the same period it began being called Dead Sea because it lacked all form of life because of its highly concentrated salinity.
