Babysitter Drove With Infant In Truck Bed

A Florida babysitter was arrested yesterday for felony child neglect after she loaded a stroller containing an eight-month-old boy into the back of a Dodge Ram pickup truck which then drove around on two of the area’s busiest roadways, police charge.

After receiving several 911 calls from alarmed motorists, the vehicle was approached by Daytona Beach police, who found Keyona Davis, 23, seated in the back of the truck bed next to the stroller.

The driver of the 1994 truck was identified in an arrest affidavit as “Mr. B. White,” who was cited for reckless driving.

Davis, pictured in the above mug shot, was arrested since she “should have reasonably concluded that a 8 mth old child in a stroller in the bed of a pick-up truck is a highly dangerous situation and incredibly unsafe,” according to the affidavit.

The incident, police charged, could have resulted in “serious injury or death to a child especially being driven on 2 of the most traveled roadways & intersections in the county.” It is unclear why Davis put the baby--who was not harned--in the vehicle bed instead of inside the truck’s cab.

After Davis’s arrest, cops contacted the baby’s mother, who arrived at the arrest scene and took custody of her child. The woman “was in tears as I told her about the incident,” a cop reported.

Davis is locked up in the Volusia County jail in lieu of $5000 bond. Records show that her rap sheet includes busts for car theft, cocaine possession, shoplifting, resisting arrest, criminal mischief/property damage, and fleeing law enforcement. While sentenced to 1-1/2 years on the latter two counts, she only spent spent six months in state prison before being released last January. Davis was also arrested last week for misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Whithout looking up the nationalities of the parties involved, I will say this sounds like rednecks from the trailer park.

Come on, guess again. Best 2 out of 3?

How about someone posting the statistics of how much welfare-WIC-Subsidized Housing-Food Stamps-Earned Income Credit this woman has sucked out of the American taxpayer in her 23 years—including the year her MOMMA was carrying her???

Any bets about a recorded FATHER for this piece of work???

Betcha she's 3rd generation welfare.

Pretty much unable to function in normal society.

Heck after touring around in Fl one year on my bike I just hope the little fella had some goggles on, some of those big bugs flying around down there hurt like hell at 45 mph.

The blue ones follow a I-IV-V progression.

It is still legal in many places to drive with kids in the back of a pickup.

“PHOENIX - State lawmakers will debate this week whether to continue to let children travel unrestrained in the open bed of pickup trucks.

The measure, to be debated Thursday by members of the House Transportation Committee, would forbid anyone younger than 18 from traveling in the back of a pickup unless “safely restrained.”

“Only 24 states currently have laws placing restrictions on kids riding in the back of pickup trucks, the pediatrician group says.”

Looks like it would be legal in Arizona, provided the stroller was tied...

Why wasn’t the driver charged with felony child neglect as well? He knew the child was in the truckbed. The truck didn’t move without his turning the key in the ignition and driving.

Why she didnt just hook the stroller to the trailer hitch with a rope and tow it (like most normal folks would) I’ll never know!!

Correct. Back then fear did not rule America as it does today.

Nope.

But I will bump back the number of years to maybe 40 years ago.

Are you so young that you don’t recall a time - before seat belts and airbags - when it was common for kids to ride in the back of pickup trucks?

I answered my own question by looking at your FReep page. You are 34. So no. I guess you don’t remember a time when it was common....

Still legal in many states. Less common, but still legal.

I remember when we had a station wagon, and my Dad would put a mattress in the back for my sister and I to sleep on and play on while traveling across the country. No seat belts, and no thoughts about them...
