The recession pushed more people in the Washington area into living with relatives and friends, according to new census figures showing a sharp rise in families who have taken in adult children, siblings, parents and roommates.
Almost 1.2 million of the regions 6 million residents were living with extended family members and friends last year, a 33 percent rise over the past decade. Nationwide, according to recently released 2010 Census statistics, at least 54 million people are in a similar spot.
We havent seen anything like this since the Depression, said Frances Goldscheider, a Brown University sociologist who has studied families and living arrangements.

I thought DC was one of the few islands of vibrant growth.
In related news, the IRS is announcing that extended family members, friends, and children over the age of 18 who are living in someone’s home, constitute renters or tennants. As such, imputed income must be declared on your federal tax returns even if no money is paid for tennancy rights.
Yes, but when a boarded up meth-lab rowhouse in Southeast DC costs $150,000, what choice is there?
For Liberal whites only...
BINGO! The Dems accused a GOP Congressman of just this thing when he couldn't afford housing and was sleeping in his office! Double Standard? Nah...
Are you serious?
I totally believe this. I currently have eight of us here: myself, teenage son, 24-year old son, 27-year old son, his wife, their two kids, and daughter-in-law’s sister. DIL waitresses part time and middle son is part time too. Oldest son hasn’t been able to find work in 2 years.
A few nurses I work with also have their grown children back home with them as well.
Times are tough for a whole lot of families right now. We’re struggling mightily, but thankful to be together and healthy.
And people wonder why there’s a depression in the housing market.
Hey, they voted overwhelmingly for CHANGE right? Looks like they got their change in spades.
Where I live (S.E. Texas) just about everyone has taken in friends/relatives to help make ends meet. It is getting bad out there and I understand extended unemployment ends Jan 2012. That is gonna put the squeeze on a bunch of folks.
Each person gets an individual exemption from taxation which represents housing and necessities. I think it's now around $2800 per person. If you have engaged in a free living deal with relatives, that is a subsidy which is no longer applicable.
Ya think the DC homeless should check into moving in with Pelosi, Reid, Kerry, Waters, Frank, Biden, or any of the “we feel your pain” Liberal RAT like-minded, caring Liberals in Congress?
We have several farm properties. We rented one house out to my daughter for $350 per month. The IRS made us claim an additional $400 per month as imputed income because we were undercharging for rent based on area averages.
Watch out on this!
Fixing the housing market is a matter of punishing those who live for free and are not enabling the employment of HUD administrative gubmint workers.
The poor need to be regulated ya know.
This should be pointed out to seniors reluctant to take hits in social security and medicare.
If a dwindling labor pool is forced to pay for ever increasing senior benefits, their children will not be able to move out of the house until they are ready to retire themselves!
Nah - not DC - it’s Martha’s Vineyard. Obams’s vacationing in the only place in the US doing well. Liberal elites - those who feed off everyday Americans are doing well... very well - thank you.
