Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, tucked away in the northwest corner of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, won the title of "Good Morning America's" Most Beautiful Place in America.

Tens of thousands of viewers voted online for this Michigan park, which is one of the nation's best-kept secrets. The hidden gem boasts 64 miles of beaches along Lake Michigan, two islands, 26 inland lakes, more than 50,000 acres of land, and the monumental sand dunes from which it gets its name.

In June, "GMA" set out in search of the most beautiful places in America. Viewers nominated their favorite places online, sending in thousands of photos from across the country showcasing spectacular sunsets, regal mountaintops and jaw-dropping views, many with awe-inspiring stories to match.

From there "GMA" narrowed the field down to 10 -- Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mich.; Newport, R.I.; Cape Cod, Mass.; Point Reyes, Calif.; Aspen, Colo.; Sedona, Ariz; Destin, Fla.; Asheville, N.C.; Lanikai Beach, Hawaii; and Grand Teton National Park, Wyo.

Blasphemy!

I know, but waiting for Michigan to win again against OSU is like waiting for the Tigers to win another World Series. Now I can't stand to watch college football or MLB.

Great link, thanks! I just climbed the dune from the water about a week ago. Running back down and jumping in the water is a wonderful treat.

At Tahquamenon, we swam into the falls and popped up behind the falling water. We just sat there and watched the falls come down right in front of us. Favorite moment of a lifetime of U.S. travel.

Hi Nit, I haven’t been here for almost a week. That is a beautiful place, I’m so glad you got to experience that.

The kids still talk about that. Lucky it was an extremely warm summer. We swam in every one of the Great Lakes that year.

There’s one place in the UP of MI that I must revisit (July, 1980)- Porcupine Mountains and the Lake of the Clouds.

“You’re just stuck with Detroit voters ruining your statewide elections”.

How is it that Detroit voters are running our statewide elections? If there’s any issue with our elections, it’s that we’ve had open primaries on the GOP side, which is finally being addressed. Additionally, with all of the voter fraud going on, I’ve never been able to vote without showing my ID. We may have problems, but we survived two terms of Granholm and will make a come back. Mayor Bing, although a Democrat, is doing about as good as he can given what’s been handed to him. He’s stood up to the unions, city council and corruption within the police department. It aint going to happen overnight.

When you say INTO, you mean from the LOWER part, right?

I would not want to go OVER the falls!

Thank God we elected Ruth Johnson as Secretary of state. I think she’ll actually deal with the voter fraud issue.

You can’t swim in the lower falls these days but its got a very nice wooden walkway out over the rapids.

Wow..... Well, I’m a desert rat through and through, and I can look for miles out here and see no one, but I have to say, I wish I were at that gorgeous lake now!! It’s not a dry heat right now, a big oppressive...

Superior is one seriously cold lake.

Last time I was up there I came across an Amish family on the beach and I could swear the mother uttered a string of profanity after stepping in that water. LOL

My town, Charlevoix, was narrowly edged out from First Place in the World’s Best Harbor, in Yachting Magazine.
