President Obama has again acknowledged the necessity of doing something many Democrats fiercely oppose -- reforming entitlement programs, such as Medicare and Social Security.
On a Midwest bus tour stop in Minnesota, Obama spoke in favor of changes to entitlement programs being eyed by the 12-member congressional committee charged with finding budget savings that will get past partisan gridlock, stave off future credit downgrades and increase the federal debt.
"There have been times when our side, when Democrats aren’t always as flexible as we need to be," Obama said. "Sometimes I do get frustrated when I hear folks say, 'You can't make any changes to any government programs.' Well, that can't be right."
The president has repeatedly conceded that something must be done, saying Medicare in particular cannot survive without reform.
"We will not be able to sustain that program no matter how much taxes go up," he said in late July. "I mean, it's not an option for us to just sit by and do nothing."
In spite of that, just as the president suggested, many Democrats remain steadfastly opposed to any changes in any of the programs. In fact, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi boasted that Democrats had blocked such reforms in the deficit talks.
"We did protect the benefits, the Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits. That is a priority for us," she said.

That revenue chart is scary. Social Security and Medicare revenues are equal to Income Tax revenues.
What Federal Budget is that? The one nobama sent the Senate this past spring that went down in flames 97-0? IIRC, we haven't had a budget in two years or so. Just continuing resolutions.

I would guess they'd look at that chart and say "Well, geez, - look at how much we're wasting on defense! Get rid of that, and we'll fix everything!"
In protecting the benefits, his priority, he is dooming the system to insolvency. It's pure BS.

Don’t look too deep into anything he says on his Magical Misery tour he is floating balloons like an Olympic opening to see which ones fly. The democrats may be communists, or socialist but they did not get to power being stupid. They can read the same numbers we do and probably have more accurate numbers and they know they are in trouble. It is a lifetime till 2012 but they are starting now. Whatever sound bites grow legs Obama will run with. This is survival and the end justifies the means. That doesn’t mean he will do anything he talks about but will try to convince the public he will.
If he can’t bedazzle them with brilliance, he’ll baffle them with bull sh*t!
He has no intention on cutting entitlements, period. Yada, yada, yada,...
