President Obama has again acknowledged the necessity of doing something many Democrats fiercely oppose -- reforming entitlement programs, such as Medicare and Social Security.
On a Midwest bus tour stop in Minnesota, Obama spoke in favor of changes to entitlement programs being eyed by the 12-member congressional committee charged with finding budget savings that will get past partisan gridlock, stave off future credit downgrades and increase the federal debt.
"There have been times when our side, when Democrats arent always as flexible as we need to be," Obama said. "Sometimes I do get frustrated when I hear folks say, 'You can't make any changes to any government programs.' Well, that can't be right."
The president has repeatedly conceded that something must be done, saying Medicare in particular cannot survive without reform.
"We will not be able to sustain that program no matter how much taxes go up," he said in late July. "I mean, it's not an option for us to just sit by and do nothing."
In spite of that, just as the president suggested, many Democrats remain steadfastly opposed to any changes in any of the programs. In fact, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi boasted that Democrats had blocked such reforms in the deficit talks.
"We did protect the benefits, the Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits. That is a priority for us," she said.

Three years to make a proposal, now he sees a need for entitlement reform? Sharp as a tack, that one.
He can start with ObamaCare to see if he’s for real.
He’s seen his poll numbers.
He's so good at lying, it makes Boehner cry.
Is this bad writing or do they actually go in with the explicit intention to increase the debt?
And he’d be in good company, since they had a hand in giving him the white house

I do hope so. That will keep the Democrats out of the Republican primaries and Romney won't get win.
We paid for the “Greatest Generation,” most of whom did not pay into SS all their lives.
The very first wave of Boomers are starting to retire now, and since they were not the overwhelming Bambi voters that the young were, they’re expendable.
If the SS fund had used that money properly, this wouldn’t be a problem. But I can bet you that this is not what Obama wants.
He doesn’t want the money put out of the reach of the Federal Government and invested, and he doesn’t want the hordes of SSI receivers (alcoholics, drug users, and sometimes even for things like “working gives me a migraine,” I kid you not) dumped from SS.
He doesn’t want to prevent his homies and his lobbyists and medical appliance companies and corrupt doctors from collecting billions in fraudulent payments from Medicare, or impose a modest co-pay on the low-income folks that might prevent them from regarding a $1,000 trip to the emergency room for a head cold to be a natural right.
He doesn’t want to reform anything in the way it should be done. He wants to install Obamacare to replace Medicare, and he simply wants to get rid of people who might logically expect to collect something from the retirement system into which they have paid all their lives.
What he says never lines up with what actually happens. If he says there's going to be entitlement reform, bet against it.
I think this is really gonna fire up the Kucinich-Dean wing of the party for a primary challenge
Yea, but you don’t triangulate on your party staple. It’s like the Republicans triangulating on Taxes Any candidate who tries it would be crunched in the primaries.
Clinton triangulated on Welfare, an issue the vast majority of the country agrees with curtailing. I don’t think Obama has the stones to do it.
I don’t see any big deal about this clown talking about entitlement reform. It’s not new. He’s going to reform entitlements. He’s going to cut the deficit in half. He’s going to act in a ‘balanced’ way. Healthcare reform will reduce the deficit. He’s just like Reagan.
The truth is that he thinks people are stupid and he knows the media is in his pocket. He is not going to reduce spending. Period. He is going to appoint a radical to every post he appoints. He is going to socialize America.
But he wants a moderate image. The media will help him. Just don’t fall for it.
That whole “Entitlement Programs” section needs to be simply lopped off all its funds and all its departments, agencies, bureaus and employees. Then, after a short space, we could get back to being a prosperous country with some freedoms and stuff like that.
I am an early Boomer. I am receiving Social Security. That SS will do me no good when the dollar is worth nothing which must be shortly. Social Security should be ended. At least those under 50 should be cut off from payments and receiving it. Ideally we would all be cut off. End the damned thing. And Medicare, too, along with all the rest of the entitlements. Put the USA back on a survival track, survival with liberty.
This is all an attempt to "Move to the center" while allowing his "Democrat friends on my side of the aisle" to throw a hissy fit...he isn't CHANGING. He is POSING.
He wants nothing more than to increase entitlements and make more of the population blood sucking leeches.
His definition of ‘reform’ is not the same as our definition. Just to be clear.
Yep. This is pure Kabuki theater. Classic Obama strawman argumentation - “there are those who say absurd thing X; there are those who say absurd thing Y; I reject this false choice”. He is addicted to these arguments and is a blatant liar to boot.
Hey, maybe he IS the smartest negro in a generation !
Yeah, riiiiight. Like anyone believes Oblidiot anymore.
