DES MOINES Rick Perry, on his first day of extended Iowa campaigning, foreshadowed his coming assault Monday against Mitt Romney and swiped back at the former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalists suggestion that others in the GOP race dont understand the economy.
In back-to-back answers, Perry nodded at the difference between his economic record as Texas governor and Romneys in Massachusetts and then drew a cultural contrast between his background as an Air Force pilot and family farmer and his opponents high finance pedigree.
Its being able to work with your legislature to get the right tax and regulatory and legal system in place and we done that in Texas, Perry said of how he created jobs in his decade-long tenure as governor.
Talking to reporters as he made his way through the state fair here, the Texas governor was even more direct when asked about private business experience something Romney said sets him apart from the Republican field.
Taking a populist shot at his multi-millionaire rival, Perry cited Romneys former employer by name and contrasted that experience with his time helping run his familys cotton farm.
I was in the private sector for thirteen years after I left the Air Force, he said. You know, I wasnt on Wall Street, I wasnt working at Bain Capital, but the principles of the free market they work whether youre in a farm field in Iowa or whether youre on Wall Street.
Hours earlier, Romney, on the trail in Litchfield, N.H., had taken a not-so-subtle jab at Perry.

Told of Romneys boast about knowing of the real economy, Perry shot back: Im thinking Texas is the real economy.
Bwaaa-haaaa-haaaa!!
Ah, what fun. Watching two RINO bozos who voted against Reagan attack each other.
It IS fun! I LOVE being on a winning team again!
Those bozos aren’t on my team. I’m not a liberal RINO.
Uh-huh.....
OK. We know you are a Palinbot.
If the only thing that happens with Perry is that he takes out Romney, I’ll be happy. Romney needs to go away.
He is our next president, regardless of the Palinista smear campaign. Perry 2012!
Well, he’ll take him out. And then he’ll take Obama out. That’s two things that are going to happen.
Job one is eliminating the number one rino Romney. I think that Palin is waiting for the current field to beat each other up before she gets in. Staying out also reduces the negative publicity from the Leftist media.
“He is our next president, regardless of the Palinista smear campaign. Perry 2012!”
You got that right! And I don’t think Sarah would approve of the way her supporters are acting, anyway.
Perry will be our guy. There’s no getting around it. So that’s all folks.
Palin supporter. Y’know, an actual Conservative. But, hey, you’re free to support Al Gore’s former TX campaign manager. But just don’t call yourself Conservative. Just sayin’...
Blew him a kiss, and now this, very funny stuff.
I think he has some of that Reagan humor, quick and sharp as a razor blade.
Yours. I’m voting for Palin. I already had Gore misrepresenting me for eons. I ain’t voting for the guy who was his campaign manager.
Too bad he voted against Reagan... twice.
He IS sharp. But when did he BLOW ROMNEY A KISS?! LOL!!!!
The damage has been done and your post admits as much ... Palin’s negatives are too high and she is totally unelectable .
No matter what happens , Palin’s negatives will remain the same and Palin knows it, which is why she will not run .
Thanks for clarifying. Just so you are clear:
