I tried to immigrate to Brisbane in the mid 80s.
Thats the same time that I was in Wa state.

I conceal carry a Beretta Tomcat in .32cal loaded with Glaser Safeties mixed with Hydra-shocks when I’m home. I’m talking about a defensive carbine style long gun. I’ve shot my dad’s M1 carbine which I like, but it’s his. I want my own. That’s what the original question was. Which of the three would be the better brush gun. When I’m home in the states here’s where I live, the area that is. The view is looking across the water to my area. http://www.drdale.com

When you said between a carbine, 44mag or 12 gauge I thought 3 different kinds of home protection weapons.
The Ruger 44mag carbine uses a rimmed cartridge intended for a revolver not semiauto and is prone to jam. If a 12 gauge too big for you to handle I would go with the Mini14. But we are all AR15 enthusiasts and familiar with its reliability and ease to shoot. The AR15 shoots a .223 like the Mini14 but is more compact, lighter and easier to accessorize IMHO.
If those are your only choices the Mini14 would be my recommendation but not before an AR15 for a ranch rifle.
I’m just picking it up as a collectors piece.
Been getting lot of good info. from everyone. So far it looks like the .44mag Ruger carbine. It’ll stop most anything I’d encounter up in the hills. We’ve bear, cougar, deer, elk, coyote. The lesser critters I’d use my .22 magnum by Marlin. From what folks have been saying, the .44mag would stop a truck. Thanks to all who’ve answered.
There is even a 410 upper now.
Is the Ruger carbine your choice because it’s light on the shoulder? FWIW, I own a Coonan, it’s a .357mag on a 1911 frame. It’s so easy on the hand and a pleasure to shoot but it jams periodically. Rimmed cartridges jam because they are not made for semi-auto, they are for revolvers. You can’t have a jam if a brown bear is charging.
Okay, I’ve fired my dad’s 1911A1 Springfield .45 - I managed one mag and my hands gave out. I’ve fired his M1 carbine and like it but want something with a bit more umph - when I’m home I hike the trails in the mountains and carrying a 30-30; is okay too but it bangs my shoulder too much even with a soft pad. My dad also has a Marlin Camp gun in .45cal. The Ruger .44mag is the same size, well the same size too of the M1. From everything people have told me, the .44 is the way to go. Now, if my shoulder would hold up to it. I’ll have to fire it to be sure. The Ruger uses a rotary mag. so the rounds won’t jam.

Still, that’s not many rounds. It looks like the .45 version can only take PX4 mags, vice the ability to switch to the more common mags for 9mm (model 92) and .40 S&W (model 96).
You know what? Contact Beretta directly to see if you can’t swap out the magwell insert & release button to a more common model’s hi-cap mags.
Out of curiosity, what’s the largest capacity you’ve heard of for the .45 ACP CX4?

Thanks for the link. I was hoping to find an extended magazine with 20+ rounds but maybe it doesn’t exist. I bought the CX4 knowing its limitations, but I still liked it better than an AR 15 even if it has a 30 round mag.
No search engine results on your .45 mags at 20-and-below, sorry. Relatively speaking, Midway’s price on the 10-rounder is quite good.
I’ve not done a search for .45 extensions. For the .40, it’s a 3-rd extender that gets added to the 14-rd mag to total 17 rds.
Sucker has a sharp little kick, doesn’t it? I like mine in .40, wish I had a chrono to compare to the matching pistol. I did swap out the model 96 insert & release so they use the same mags.
