Rick Perry Announces -- And the Boogeyman is Back
Commentary Magazine ^ | August 13, 2011 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 08/14/2011 3:50:13 PM PDT by DRey

“I will work every day to make Washington, DC as inconsquential in your life as I can,” says Rick Perry as he announces for president. Well, there it is. The 2012 race in a nutshell—”America is not broken. Washington D.C. is broken,” as Perry said, in contrast to Barack Obama’s continuing insistence that government must somehow lead the way out of the economic doldrums with infrastructure banks and payroll tax cuts and extending unemployment insurance. If the dividing line between Republicans and Democrats is that Democrats want, in some sense, to direct America from Washington, Republicans believe the United States should not be directed, and should instead be managed as close to the citizenry as possible.

Most people outside Texas know very little about Perry, but given his standing as a kind of amalgam of George W. Bush and Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee, he may soon occupy an unprecedented position in the imagination of liberals and the Left—perhaps the most frightening specter of anti-liberalism since Ronald Reagan precisely because he is electable. The conservative boogeyman is back."

“You’re cute, Bob. I’m sorry you are going to be so dissappointed with this election cycle. PERRY/RUBIO 2012”

That certainly sounds better than the ticket a lot of people are afraid of, given Perry’s history:

PERRY/GIULIANI 2012

In Texas a Republican gov with Republican legislature can pass a lot of things that the Guv wants. If you don’t have the legislative support then don’t campaign on it unless you are the consumate political animal that Perry is. You act like you are on Perry’s campaing staff and for sure are not helping his cause by acting like a democrat. I also don’t have time for unreasonable a people that can’t have a discussion without hurling insults so adios.

“Opting out of inoculations is tough, it involves swearing that you are philosophically or religiously opposed to the concept, having it notarized (not sure here, but someone did say that),”

Not true for Gardasil. Just had my daughter’s shots updated and they asked me if I wanted it and I said no. They said ok, good choice, and that was that.

FR is going to be an interesting place for a while.

Is it going to get more vicious than the eligibility threads? Just wonderin' what to expect ...

Sure, it’s easy now to opt-out. It’s not mandated (at least in Texas), because we managed to STOP the governor.

I don’t think anyone is talking about taking checks away from seniors. All reform plans the GOP has put forth, including the one Dubya tried and tried to get traction on, involve basically phasing out a lot of the giveaways for younger workers and giving them the opportunity to provide for their own retirement, including being able to pass their assets to their heirs.

Good article, DRey -- thanks. About two months ago, I heard Erick Erickson (of RedState.org) on WSB claim that Sarah Palin was urging Rick Perry to enter the GOP race as the best Conservative counter to Mitt Romney. Erick said that Sarah is a very smart woman who is aware of her own baggage (however undeserved), and that she views Perry as the most electable and least bloodied of all the Conservative options to Romney.

Perhaps Erick knew what he was talking about...

Yeah. I think her current bus tour is to keep her in the spotlight for a VP nod. Maybe they’ve got a deal in the making — if he gets in hot water, she’ll endorse, and he picks her for VP?

The more I learn about him, the less I trust him.

People say he can beat obama...well yeah, just about anyone can beat obama. My dogs could beat obama. But the primary is not just about picking someone who can beat the other guy.

The primary is about picking someone you'd want to have the power of the Presidency over you and like never before we must use the opportunity to get it right.

Perry is not my Governor, so I don't know him. But since he could be the President, I'm learning and trying to separate the facts from the fan club.

He sounds like a great guy, but Perry has done things as Governor that raise flags.

Everyone makes mistakes, even politicians. What I want in a President is someone who reliably errs on the side of liberty and individual rights, on the side of the Constitution.

As your examples and others show, erring on the side of liberty, individual rights and the Constitution is not the case with Perry.

Considering how well that reform went down when the stock market was performing somewhat reasonably, one would have to be smoking crack to think it would have a better shot with the ongoing meltdown.

I’ll keep hammering this out till doomsday - there are three and only three solutions to the entitlement crisis: higher taxes to pay for the benefits of the Boomers, reducing benefits to the Boomers or a combo of the first two. That’s it.

that depends on the Senate and the House. If all three are Republican, THE JOB WILL BE DONE.
