Just hours after Tim Pawlenty ended his presidential race, the race for his supporters was already well underway.
Many of the former Minnesota governors staffers, donors and volunteers said rival campaigns contacted them shortly after Pawlenty announced his decision Sunday. Rick Santorum, Jon Huntsman and Mitt Romney all made direct phone calls to key supporters, while other campaigns put out more indirect feelers.
......Tricia Pridemore, Pawlentys Georgia finance chair, immediately got an e-mail from one rival candidate and a phone call from another on Sunday morning. Declining to specify who was reaching out, she said wasnt ready to make a commitment either. Its a very sad time for everyone involved in the campaign, she said.
But she floated one possibility: Its imperative that we nominate someone with executive experience and a proven record with great results. I think many of the Pawlenty supporters will take a strong look at Governor Perry and see where they want to go.
...In a possible preview, former Ambassador Gregory Slayton, a Bush ranger who raised for McCain in 2008, abandoned Pawlenty last week for the Texas governor.
Though some Pawlenty supporters arent counting Romney out just yet despite their candidates harsh criticism of his Massachusetts health care plan that he referred to as Obamneycare.
Its going to be a migration to either Perry or Romney, said Ray Washburne, a Texas real-estate developer and restaurateur who raised money for Pawlenty. None of the other candidates are getting our people.
Washburne added, Lets get behind someone who can actually win.....
