Failed Harsdorf recall vote costs $113,500; municipalities' bill not yet available

osts for holding the recall election for state Sen. Sheila Harsdorf's 10th Senate District seat totaled at least $113,500 for the five counties in her district, according to county clerks.

The total cost of the recall is even higher, given that the reported figure counts only the cost to the counties and not the amount each municipality with a polling location spent during Tuesday's recall election and the July 12 primary.

Harsdorf, R-River Falls, retained her seat Tuesday by defeating Ellsworth schoolteacher Shelly Moore, a River Falls Democrat, tallying 58 percent of the vote compared with 42 percent for Moore.

Polk County Clerk Carole Wondra acknowledged the extra cost to her county and others.

"It will be fun telling (the county board) I need more money," Wondra said with a laugh on Friday. "I've been warning them ahead of time."

I know it’d be illegal...but personally...when you get folks riled up to do a recall...then each voter who shows up...ought to toss $3 into a can at the clerk’s desk. Call it the cost of democracy when done out of cycle.

Take it out of the teacher’s salary. That will teach them.

Democrats don’t care, it’s not THEIR money, after all.

I’ve yet to find any lib who will tell me how they intend to fund the Scott Walker recall when the Union Dues extortion ends next month.

It's time to hold people responsible for their actions. This new commie fad of calling for a "recall" of their opponents should have consequences. If you sign the petition, put your money where your mouth is.

All of those who say, "But what about when WE want to recall somebody", SAVE IT!. The commie libs have adopted recall as a tool to destroy their opponents in elected office. Here in Arizona, Pearce is going to have to come up with money for ANOTHER election this year. That's bull****. The illegals and their commie massas are also trying to set up a recall of Governor Brewer. If the commies want them recalled, let THEM pay the bill! The commie 'RATS have turned the recall system into a tool to break their opponents financially. They are abusing the system. My 2 cents.

“then each voter who shows up...ought to toss $3 into a can at the clerk’s desk. Call it the cost of democracy when done out of cycle”

I think the charge should be to each person who signs the recall petitions. At least they ought to be held for defraying the cost.

Why is it called a “Failed” recall election? It appears that the votes were successfully taken and tallied.

It was a failed recall because it did not produce the desired outcome, according to those who write headlines.

I keep forgetting to find the video of Moore’s unhinged “this is war” speech when I’m at a real computer.
