"Our generation is going to take the brunt of the force of the debt crisis," said Glass, a government major at St. Lawrence University in New York. "It's going to mean fewer jobs, higher interest rates, more debt.

Get on the Post Office or Civil Service. You’ll always have a job and a secure pension.

Not the Post Office anymore. They're cutting thousands of jobs and closing post offices.

We are a nonprofit teaching hospital with a 501c exemption. We do not have shareholders, and our profits are used to attain our goals of providing healthcare (that is, we roll those profits back in to buy equipment, expand the facilities or pay employees.)

I see the terms used somewhat interchangeably and have never really paid attention to one versus the other. Do you have some examples of each? I am curious...

LOL...as for a difference, I would guess that MY organization provides goods and services appreciated by the consumers of those services and the community in general, and THOSE organizations are devoted to destroying the country that gives them their tax-exempt status!

Do you think that the chart might be a minor clue as to the higher unemployment rate of African-Americans?

There is no doubt about it. Single parent homes and a culture that for many black kids discourages getting an education (trying to be like whitey) is a big hurdle to overcome for many if not most black Americans.

They deserve better but they are going to have to do it using the old fashioned bootstrap method if they want to improve their lot. Depending on the Dems to deliver a better life has resulted in just the opposite and they will have to give up that hope before they will make any progress toward a better lifestyle.

Don’t put this solely on the younger generation. I know lots of older people that voted for that whole “hope and change” crap and still are carrying Nobama’s water.

I worked for a nonprofit for Boy Scouts of America. I was laid off because there are NO donations.

Commonly hospitals have a not-for-profit status as a way to run their business and have certain tax-exempt privileges and also some legal liability protections. Tax-exempt does not mean that when people give the hospital money that it is deductable from that person's income taxes. It just means that the hospital does not have to pay taxes on its "profits," such as they are.

Those same hospitals may have nonprofit "foundations" that fundraise like a charity with the donations being tax-deductable for people who donate to that foundation. These are often directed at purchases of equipment and facilities.

You may be farther away from working for a nonprofit than you realize.

I think the distinction is important because I happen to know some really rich people who run, IMO, phony-baloney foundations that I'd term "vanity charities." I rather despise the way they've turned a self-serving hobby enterprise into a fatuous "philanthropy."

Yep. My 60-something boomer parents who have voted Republican their entire lives plan on voting for Obama. Reason? They're afraid Republicans will cut off their free health care

Please don't disrespect an entire generation because of your parents behavior. They don't sound very smart to me. They must be some of those "lifelong Republicans" we see popping up as the source of anonymous anti-GOP quotes around election time.

Never did trust folks like that.

All you say is true, but the truth is, that my organization is officially a nonprofit corporation and any donations to the foundation are tax deductible. Actually, the majority of American hospitals are 501c organizations.

I don’t see anything inherently good or bad in that, it is simply a way of organizing the hospital’s operations. It doesn’t mean we help poor people or underprivileged people to a greater or lesser degree, or that we are in some way better than one of the big for-profit hospital organizations. I feel that if they can make a profit, give it back to their shareholders and provide quality care that patients are happy with, then I think that is great.

What it means is we do not have shareholders, and all of our “profits” must be re-invested into the organization in some way, not paid out to individuals of any kind.

Personally, I don’t get any kind of lift or feeling of superiority by saying I work for a nonprofit. It is not relevant or important to me, except in the key way that the organization is focused on its own perpetuation by being forced to invest profits in itself, so I feel that it makes our perpetuation more likely and our institution more viable.

We are also a non-union hospital, and THAT gives me a great deal of satisfaction.

So you work for the foundation end, that raises money for tangible stuff like more personnel, equipment, facilities, etc. I have donated to similar foundations quite happily.

I think you'll find that the hospital and the foundation are two separate entities.

Some of this is personal for me, because I watch rich, fatuous people start their own "philanthropy" as a self-adoring kind of enterprise. Aren't I charitable, etc. when there's no real contribution to the general improvement of anyone's life except the rich person's vanity. I know a few of these, that start "educational, scientific" crap and then send themselves on safaris and take the costs off their taxes!!

I would like the laws and rules changed to keep them from deducting such nonsense. You see Warren Buffett do this--donate to something highly suspect and then ostentatiously demand that we raise taxes on the upper-middle class. I would like a tax on ostentatious billionaires, maybe a net worth excise tax! Take that, Warren you sickening old greedy hypocrite!

And the Bush twins don't have to work, they run around posing as the head of some pointless nonprofit, they're so charitable, these Ladies Bountiful. But don't get me started on the lazy Bush women...

Actually, I work on the business end of things, patient care.

I see exactly where you are going with the people like Buffett (and others) who use this for personal financial gain, and I agree...couldn’t agree more wholeheartedly.

OTOH, I do appreciate the fact that I may have some control and be able to willingly donate money to something I agree with and appreciate with, rather than having my tax dollars taken from my pocket and used unwillingly for something like Turkey Basters for Lesbians or “Piss Christ”.

When I donate, I keep to philanthropies that I can research myself. Even the 501c appellation is no reassurance that your money does anything useful.

I turned a cold shoulder to donating to Haiti after their earthquake. I have some personal knowledge of missionary efforts in that country. The fact is, every dollar you donate to Haiti is probably two dollars worth of misery you buy for the people there. Shaking down missionaries is a career path in Haiti. You saw how fast their law enforcement worked when they suspected some kids were being rescued for adoption? Well, bribes for babies is a business there, so their police managed to wake up for the attempted "kidnapping."

As is what I told some people who tried to raise money to "help."

I did donate to the Chileans when they had their earthquake troubles.

The 501c3's are often a cover for donating to other charities, in effect "laundering" donations. Planned Parenthood is a master at getting and HIDING donations. I could go on and on...
