Perry '01 - 'Fox's vision for an open border is a vision I embrace'
The Washington Times ^ | June 21, 2011 | Kerry Picket

Posted on 08/13/2011 6:23:25 PM PDT by Do Not Make Fun Of His Ears

Texas Governor Rick Perry, Republican, reportedly being pushed by Texas lawmakers to throw his hat into the GOP presidential ring, very often touts his background on border security, but what about the Mr. Perry's past remarks and actions about immigration and the border? He is currently supporting a bill that was just passed by the Texas Senate that would give greater power to police officers to question those who are detained about their legal status. The AP reports:

The 19-12 vote early Wednesday came after nearly eight hours of emotional debate in which Democrats railed against the bill as racist and a tool to harass Latinos.

The bill pushed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry now goes to the House for consideration, where it is expected to easily pass. The Republican super-majority in the House passed a similar version during the regular session.

Perry and supporters say the bill will help police fight crime committed by illegal immigrants. But opponents, including law enforcement chiefs in the state's largest cities and immigrant rights activists, say the measure will allow rogue officers to target Hispanics.

However, Governor Perry appeared to be talking differently about the border when he first came to office. In a 2001 Border Summit speech, Governor Perry described to fellow border governors and others in attendance the amount of poverty :

"President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity. It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity."

So, what is that "Fox vision"?

"President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity."

So, the "Fox vision" is increased economic prosperity so that the Mexicans stay on their side of the border and do not feel compelled to come here illegally?

Hey! Sounds great!

I support that vision too!

"Perry's every deviation from conservative principles,"

Your statement is COMPLETELY FALSE.

You see that pointy tip on the right hand side of that diamond where the number "100" is, Clairity?

Unless a candidate is right there, RIGHT THERE, at that pointy tip, that candidate is a "RINO" in the eyes of the Conservatively Holier Than Thou Brigade.

No that is not the "Fox vision."

The "Fox vision" is this:

"Mr. Fox said all immigration barriers should be removed to allow people to live and work in the country of their choosing, whether it be Mexico, the United States or Canada."

Mexicans living and working wherever they want, U.S., Mexico, Canada. No border. THAT is the open border he envisions. That is AMNESTY.

Perry said he's fine with that, so long as the following criteria are met:

"President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity. It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity."

He's not opposed to Mexicans crossing the border and living and working here, he just wants to make sure they are not doing it because of a rotten Mexico economy. So, he's ok with the whole live and work wherever you want idea, it's just that there are some issues to iron out.

Sounds a lot like Bush, huh?

It's amnesty. There's no better word for it.

I don't care if Mexico becomes Utopia, America is a sovereign nation, and a nation without borders is NOT A NATION.

>>Gotta admit Perry does run the “hottest” threads<<

I call it the “bandwagon” phenomenon. People get all fired up about a candidate, and don’t want to hear any bad facts come out.

So they plug their ears and shoot the messenger to defend their candidate tooth and nail, facts be damned.

Personal pride, I guess, like defending your favorite NFL team.

I was likened to Saul Alinsky on this very thread, for daring to post any facts which might cause someone to pause for a moment and examine Rick Perry’s record.

Oh well, I don’t really give a flying crap. There’s too much at stake to buy a “pig in a poke” right now.

Windflier: “An honest American can no longer even make a living in some trades in this state.”

You can say that again, and it doesn’t only apply to Texas. Try hiring a roofing or concrete company in Oklahoma. Good luck finding a crew that speaks English.

All you PDS coyotes know exactly that these 2bit stories are half truth distortions, but thruth and fact doesn’t seem to bother any of the Perry bashers. That is Saul Alinski personified.

Hard to tell if the PDS bashers are paulnutz or who your preferred candidate may be, for all anyone can tell it may be “anyone except a viable conservative”. I hardly think Palin would appreciate these nasty liberal tactics done on her behalf.

“vetting candidates”

Yeah, some of these Perry people are making me skittish. If I were looking at a used car and got some of the responses I’m seeing here, after asking to look under the hood, I’d walk away.

(”Why, it’s a CHEVY, son—what are you, some kind of Ford man?! Only commies `n Okies drive Fords (slowly, sadly shaking head)”
Are you callin’ me a liar? Take my word for it—thut back tire is only flat on the bottom ...
Huh, whuzzah? that coal black and sawdust on the workbench? Nothin’ to see here! Nuthin at all.
Now lissen to me—look at me when ah’m talkin’ to you boy: this here Guvunah is the greatest thing since the seedless watuhmelon, since the last model, the `Dubya’—an’ if you don’ believe me jus’ ask me. Yeah boy howdy.”)

So, Perry calls illegal aliens “undocumented workers.” Maybe he’s a decent guy on some issues, but he stinks on immigration. Shoot, even Juan McPain says he wants to secure the borders first.

There are certain nitwits who entertain the ludicrous notion that they are going to “shame” or “browbeat” us into not examining their candidate with a critical eye.

It’s really pathetic that they are afraid of facts getting in the way of their opinions.
