“”Perry, 58, and Khan, 71, struck up an improbable friendship nearly a decade ago, resulting in a UT program exposing schoolteachers to Muslim beliefs and culture.””

I think that passes as more than an occasional speech.

Well, I don't know what to tell you. There are no politician in America that are going to do anything other than try to get along with Muslims. I think Islam is silly and barbaric, but I've spent several years in Iraq, Afghanistan and other locales. Islam in, say, the Philippines is not the same animal as Islam in Saudi Arabia.

Ismaili Islam, the sect referenced in your article, is sterilized version of Shia Islam so mild that it is considered heretical by the other sects. If you feel the need to make your Muslim communities feel welcome, then this would be the group to talk to. All politicians will do this once they wind up with Muslim constituents. As I mentioned in another post, there's Saudi Royals and Muslim Brotherhood groups that the current and last president entertained at length. Ismailis are kittens compared to them.
