AUSTIN, Texas Texas Gov. Rick Perry is running for president, a spokesman confirmed Thursday, a move certain to shake up the race for the GOP nomination much to the delight of conservatives looking for a candidate to embrace.
Perry spokesman Mark Miner said the governor would make his intentions known on Saturday while visiting South Carolina and New Hampshire just as most of his presidential rivals compete in a test vote in Iowa.
Official word of Perrys entrance into the race came just hours before eight candidates, including GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, were to appear on stage during a nationally televised debate.
It wasnt much of a surprise. The longest-serving governor in Texas history has flirted with a presidential run since spring and has spent the past few months courting Republicans in early voting states and laying the groundwork for a campaign. He met privately with potential donors from California to New York and gave rabblerousing speeches to party faithful, casting himself as a fiscally responsible social conservative.
His intentions became even clearer over the past few days when officials disclosed that he would visit an important trio of states, a campaign-like schedule timed to overshadow the debate and the Iowa straw poll and, perhaps, wreak havoc on a field led by Romney.

Well our governor will be in the White House if you don't hurry though.
Won’t matter. They’re going to attack anyone and everyone. We have to ignore the fringe kooks and win the same independents that voted with us last year and poll with us today.
Our formula the past couple years has been very effective...whether it was the early NJ and VA state government elections, Scott Brown in MA and the mid-terms. Getting accomplished good communicators with a track record to come out confidently with conservative solutions is a sure winner. People are voting for the common sense conservative solutions when they are able to be articulated. Perry is in a good position to do this. We’ll see how he performs in real life.
Well, it's all up to her, of course, but I'm just figuring the sooner the endorsement, the sooner she can campaign for him. I'm sure she'll know what's best, and that could well be Sept. 3rd.
“We need a REAL conservative to set things straight.”
Can you name any with National Name recognition?
We DO have a few in Congress, like Pence, but the media is so terrified of elevating their status to Democrat-threatening that they simply ignore them, unless they gaffe, while the pronouncemets of corrupt whackjobs like Barney Frank are National News.
Look for her on Hannity on Saturday.
I have read enough about him to know he won’t get my vote. Sick and tired of this same dog and pony show from the republicans....
To me Perry would represent the status quo in Washington. We have had over 20 years of it and look were it has gotten us.
The data indicates nothing of the kind.
Furthermore, Texas has relatively high unemployment
for itself (2010 with error bars going back to 1976
for comparison)
Do you think she'll wait until the straw poll results are known?
I live in Texas and have never heard of Perrycare. WTF?
Sober up.
Better read his book, “Fed Up”
He has a particular distaste for washington status Quo.
Perry for POTUS.
Rubio for VP
Palin for Secretary of Energy.
Romney for Secretary of the Treasury.
Attorney General. Haven’t decided on that one yet. Any suggestions?
No PerryCARE? WTH are you talking about?
No PerryCARE? WTH are you talking about?
Will he make this announcement in Spanish?
o/t...on Fox News....what the heck has Monica Crowley done to her hair??
Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Uh...the announcement was made today (August 11, 2011.)
Not a full fledged endorsement, she'll let the field pare down first I think.
PerryCARE is the MANDATE of drugs for children
who do not need them by executive order
to help the Governor’s Chief of Staff’s company.
Very bad RINO “judgment”.
I’ve posted my “Four Horseman To Stop The Obamalypse” choices before...Palin/Cain/Bachmann/West...altered my list to include Perry awhile ago as well. Palin is still my top choice but she’s not given any indication of running, maybe she’ll be helping out in other ways....I believe her and Perry get along politically.
