A highlight from the transcript:
Q: Youve talked about how all of the social issues are important and this election is going to be about what the voters care most about: economy and jobs. Is it your hope, if you become a candidate, that even voters who disagree with you on social issues will find your record and argument on jobs so compelling that they vote for you even though they did disagree with you?
A: Well, Im pretty sure there has never been a candidate [where] all the people agree with his or her positions on the issues. And there are single-issue voters, and I understand that. I respect that. Ive run three times in Texas and I would suggest to you, Texas is somewhat of a microcosm of the rest of the country, particularly in this first decade of the 21st century. We are very, very cosmopolitan, if you will, very urban, but we have our rural areas. We have an incredible diversity of people [who] live in this state. This is not the Texas of my father. It is a very diverse state. Running for the governorship of the state of Texas, I recognized all the diversity of thought.
So, whats the most important thing thats facing this country? Its getting this economy back. I am a pro-business governor. I will be a pro-business President if this does, in fact, ensue and Im blessed to be elected President of the United Statesunabashedly [so] because the fact of the matter is, theres nothing more important than having an environment created by government that allows for the private sector to risk its capital to know that they have a good chance of having a return on the investment. Because at that particular point in time, the men and women who are out of work today can be back employed. They can take care of their family. They can do the things they desire in their lives. And without that strong economy, America cant be strong militarily. We cant have, frankly a presence in the world that we need to have. It all goes back to having an economy that people are comfortable withthey can risk their capital and theyll have a return on the investment. We dont have that today.
Q: There are people whove looked upeven though youre not yet a candidateyour record and your endorsement of Mayor Giuliani in the last campaign, some of the positions youve taken on immigration, etcetera, and they say Rick Perry is not actually as conservative as he says. What do you say to those people?
A: Well, you know, I stand on my record. I thought Mayor Giuliani did a wonderful job of managing a city. He was very strong militarily. He was as strong on crime as any big city Mayor has ever been. He and I were 180 degrees on social issues, but he would put strict constructionists on the Supreme Court, which dealt with those social issues. I happen to be comfortable that I was making the right decisions and that as President, when it comes to those social issues, its very important to have that strict constructionist view of who you put on the Supreme Court. Because theyd look at the constitution and say, you know what, that issue dealing with abortion is not in the constitution. We will put it back to the states. Now if the states want to pass an amendment and three quarters of the states want to pass an amendment to make this be a change of our United States constitution, then just follow that process. And Im a big believer that thats how our country should work.
Q: So if you got in, would you be the most conservative candidate in the race? Or as conservative as everybody else?
A: Yeah I dont think theres any doubt about that. But again, we go back to whats the most important issue here? I mean if somebody wants to go back and find, oh heres a little spot right hereyou know, I was a democrat at one time in my life. I was 25 years old before I think I ever met a person who would admit being a Republican. So the key is, Ive got a record. And that record, particularly when it comes to the most important issues in this campaign, which is creating the climate of America that gives incentives to job creators to risk their capital and create jobs for our citizens, I will put that up against anybody whos running and particularly against this President we have today, whose jobs record is abysmal.
romney’s sucha doofus.
Romney MUST be stopped, then may the best person win after that.
Aug. 5-7 (Latest CNN Poll) and July 18-20
Romney 17% 16%
Perry 15% 14%
Giuliani 12% 13%
Palin 12% 13%
Paul 12% 8%
Bachmann 7% 12%
Gingrich 5% 4%
Cain 4% 6%
Huntsman 4% 1%
Pawlenty 2% 3%
Santorum 2% 2%
Johnson * *
McCotter * *
Someone else (vol.) 2% 1%
None/ No one (vol.) 4% 8%
No opinion 2% 1%
Expect a big change to this poll when Sarah declares one way or the other. If if it’s NO then look for Perry to zoom to the top, Bachmann to make a bit of a comeback and Romney to fall to 2nd place.
If it’s YES then I expect it to be Romney first and Palin & Perry tied for second and Ron Paul close behind. But we could be surprised. It might be Palin first.
Time will tell.
Interviews with 1,008 adult Americans ...
I believe this would favor Romney when compared to a Likely Voter poll. More liberal and better name recognition than Perry. With real voters I would bet Perry is actually ahead of Romney. And perhaps Palin as well.
If Perry is going to be a Romney Killer, I’m on board. Jump on in Rick.
Bachmann never had a serious chance. Perry certainly does. Perry/Palin might be the best bet.
The Republican nominee will be either Romney or Rick Perry. Michelle Bachmann is very good, she’ll get primary votes, but she will never be able to raise the money that Perry and Romney can raise the big bucks and are doing so right now. Money is what you need to win. Money and votes and hard working volunteers
You can hate Romney and Perry but either one can beat Bammy Boy by at least 15 points. One of my happiest days will be January 21 2013 when a Republican President is inaugurated
The lack of conservative governors in this primary is startling.
Governors make good presidents. That is Bachmann’s biggest liability.
Romney is a polished turd, but he was also a governor....so that, and name recognition, explains some of his support.
Huntsman/Pawlenty are very weak men, Republicans do not want weakness.
Perry, while flawed, is the best conservative governor we have available right now.
If Perry decides to get in, I then hope Palin decides to stay out or we will be back to splitting the vote again.
I agree that Bachmann lacks money, lacks executive experience (as governor or majority leader) and lacks crossover appeal although I admire her toughness and principles.
The only three candidates who can really take the nomination are Palin, Perry and Romney. Palin would no-doubt be the best conservative president but will she attract enough people outside her base to beat Obama?
Romney has a lot of crossover appeal and has the wealth to stay in the race but he lacks sincerity in many of his conservative positions and his RomneyCare history is going to take one of our best issues off the table. The thought is that, even if he beats Obama, he won’t roll back Obama. Plus, there’s the unknown factor of anti-Mormon bigotry that could prevent him from winning.
That leaves Perry who also has some credibility problems with conservatives but will appeal to most of them while his success as governor will appeal to a lot of moderates and independents. He can be positioned as the antidote to Obama on a number of fronts. Will he actually roll back Obama if elected? Hard to say but he probably has the best chance of uniting Republicans, beating Obama and turning America back on the right course.
My heart wants Sarah to win but my brain tells me Perry has the best chance to actually win and revoke Obamunism.
You can tell the MSM fears Obama is going to lose. They are increasingly desperate to pick our nominee.
Americans will be getting Rick rolled with Perry, he is not a conservative
Romney = Howard Dean’s lead in ‘03.
It’s a myth that he will get the nomination.
Perry will bury him.
Vote Rick Perry! Because we just can’t get enough of that good ol’ Bush Republicanism!
