After a delay of more than two days, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has "decided to follow the law" and release the names, ranks, hometowns and units of those killed in the Aug. 6 Chinook helicopter crash in Afghanistan, Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said Wednesday. The names will be released in the next 24 hours. Panetta "never intended not to release the names," Lapan said, explaining that a delay in their release was the result of a request from military commanders in the Special Operations community who wanted to review the policy of releasing names "because of possible (security) implications

You're kidding, right? There are ALL sorts of protections for the local police force. Just try visiting one as a census taker for a real education.
These aren't regular soldiers doing a 2 year hitch in a regular division; these are highly specialized troops who participate in unconventional warfare. To expose their families is insane. By all means let's give them the same protection we give the local police.
“....the admin will be held responsible for needlessly and recklessly endangering them....”
.
You’re joking, aren’t you? Since when has this administration been held responsible for ANYTHING?
according to my congress critters office, bill young, the families have released the information ... and young’s office has nothing more to say about it (except to get very insistent on having your full name & address... which i haven’t willfully given in years)
is anyone able to confirm that the families willfully advertised the information? were they informed how dangerous releasing such information would be?
how about the news agencies?
seriously, the last thing our operatives should have to worry about while in the field should be their families... let along retribution for actions committed on behalf of the US govt
They should have a private discussion with Ollie North. I’d like to get his take on the subject.
Panetta and Obama don’t give a red rats ass about the families of these heroes.
Compare this to the Valerie-Plame-Blame-Game story. We have now ACTUALLY put some people at risk.
i’m sorry, did you think i meant by lawyers?
If your gonna only protect a few, you need to protect everyone. While only let one group have a understanding that their names wont be released, while the common soldier has their names released.
It is a horrible domino effect. Because of a law congress passed in 2004 all dead soldiers names from three named wars are to be released. (I am going to GUESS the democrats did this as part of the demonizing of Bush promoting him as WAR POTUS hiding the deaths-Any half brained bonehead should have put a spec Ops clause in this congressional law)
So since the MSM know this law they reported and went local to the families. I can’t find this 2004 law online any where online so the above is all speculation. But whoever did not add a special forces clause should be fired/resign.
wtf?!
so if you’re on a high profile mission, you can expect all your personal details to be given to the enemy
wives? kids? brothers & sisters? mom & dad?
all on the chopping block to appease the ROP
wtf is this all about?!
would you continue following orders knowing your family will be served up if the enemy demands it? of course, if you didn’t follow orders they would probably STILL be served up.
i’m failing to find the difference between the current admin and enemies in the camp openly passing info to their counterparts overseas
the members of specops teams are more ... personal ... then other branches. very small units striking high priority targets easily deemed of value to the enemy
‘celebrating’ the members of the teams is insane... especially considering the nutbags in the ROP
hell, the press will blur the faces of police CIs and undercover agents. they would never consider posting all the information regarding the officers families.
i tried reaching out to one paper so far, to see why they felt the need to push the personal details. no answer from 2 lines. i’ll keep pushing... i’ll be fascinated to know the logic behind this
I made the same comment to my husband the other day, and told him about the same novel which I read years ago. It's hard for me to believe that it was published after 9/11!
Might as well make up a list of their friends and their families as well.
LEO's and their families tend associate with other LEO's and their families. Construction workers associate with other construction workers. Marines and their families with other Marine Corps families. I would venture a guess that Navy Seals associate with other Seals and their families as well.
Who do LEO's go to when investigating a crime? Friends, family and neighbors. Want to gather intelligence on Special Opps units or any US military units? You don't go to the front gate at Fort Campbell and ask for the information officer. You collect bits and pieces of information about individuals.
Loose lips do sink ships and get our troops killed.
another interesting tidbit
the helicopter was shot down on the 6th
on the 7th, hometown papers were reporting of the deaths of those on the helicopter along with enough personal information to locate family members
i spoke with one editor so far. she said she believed the information was handed to them by the govt.
within 24 hours of the event???

United States Navy SEAL
In times of war or uncertainty there is a special breed of warrior ready to answer our Nations call. A common man with uncommon desire to succeed.
Forged by adversity, he stands alongside Americas finest special operations forces to serve his country, the American people, and protect their way of life.
I am that man.
My Trident is a symbol of honor and heritage. Bestowed upon me by the heroes that have gone before, it embodies the trust of those I have sworn to protect. By wearing the Trident I accept the responsibility of my chosen profession and way of life. It is a privilege that I must earn every day.
My loyalty to Country and Team is beyond reproach. I humbly serve as a guardian to my fellow Americans always ready to defend those who are unable to defend themselves. I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions. I voluntarily accept the inherent hazards of my profession, placing the welfare and security of others before my own.
I serve with honor on and off the battlefield. The ability to control my emotions and my actions, regardless of circumstance, sets me apart from other men.
Uncompromising integrity is my standard. My character and honor are steadfast. My word is my bond.
We expect to lead and be led. In the absence of orders I will take charge, lead my teammates and accomplish the mission. I lead by example in all situations.
I will never quit. I persevere and thrive on adversity. My Nation expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down, I will get back up, every time. I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my teammates and to accomplish our mission. I am never out of the fight.
We demand discipline. We expect innovation. The lives of my teammates and the success of our mission depend on me - my technical skill, tactical proficiency, and attention to detail. My training is never complete.
We train for war and fight to win. I stand ready to bring the full spectrum of combat power to bear in order to achieve my mission and the goals established by my country. The execution of my duties will be swift and violent when required yet guided by the very principles that I serve to defend.
Brave men have fought and died building the proud tradition and feared reputation that I am bound to uphold. In the worst of conditions, the legacy of my teammates steadies my resolve and silently guides my every deed. I will not fail.”

There have been 4 times in my social life when I have not followed this. I have paid dearly each time. Then again, my life has turned on a dime enough times, beginning at the age of 1 and 1/2 (which, yes, I remember) that I should be a millionaire. And here I really, REALLY don’t like change.
Hitler overtook the regular military echelon and demolished it in large part.
Tyrants must eliminate threats, especially those who would be the most lethal.
Pentagon-level echelon = politics. Many now are toadies. The same cannot be said for men in the field, including 1,000s of men and women. 0bama is trying to oust the opposition and put in ‘his’ cadres.
