Fox News off and then on again at Escondido gym
Fitness devotee Dianne Lowe's best exercise in recent days may be standing up for what she says is free speech.
The five-year member of the LA Fitness club on El Norte Parkway in Escondido was outraged last week when she went to turn on the right-leaning cable channel while working out and found it wouldn't come in.
Lowe talked to a gym attendant, who she said told her that LA Fitness officials had ordered it shut down.
"They told me, 'We are not allowed to turn on Fox News,' and that was a decision from corporate," Lowe said.
Lowe immediately complained to the club and dashed off a letter to LA Fitness.
An attendant at the Escondido club on Monday morning confirmed that CNN was the only news channel available on its television screens ---- but a check later in the day revealed that Fox News was back.
"It was a satellite issue," the attendant said Monday afternoon, saying the club had changed its provider and had lost the Fox channel for a few days.
There have been similar complaints that Fox News was dropped at other LA Fitness clubs around the country, according to reports on the Internet.
In each case, unnamed LA Fitness representatives also said the absence of the channel was a satellite issue.
Repeated calls and emails Friday and Monday to numerous LA Fitness officials ---- including the media office at the company's headquarters in Irvine ----- went unanswered.
Lowe said Fox is her network of choice because she believes the network provides the most "fair and balanced" coverage, as it routinely proclaims.
"I don't want to go to the gym and have them dictate to me what I can watch," the 62-year-old Lowe said Monday.

BTW, here in metrowest Boston, I went into a local McDonald’s yesterday, and they had one mounted TV — it was tuned to Fox News. (One Tv, sound off, close-captioned).
As a cash paying customer, I'd at least call and complain. If they don't get FOX then, there's not much you can do. Maybe if they get enough complaints, they'll decide to keep their customers happy and do something.
If there is only one TV, I don’t necessarily see CNN as a bad choice. It is not as overtly opinion oriented as FOX or MSNBC or is it?
Agreed and that is exactly what I did... quit the gym after the trial period was over. What was puzzling to me was why they let me go so readily. I knew that they could make Fox available and all I was asking for was to be able to view it on the individual screen that was part of the machine that I was personally exercising on. This of course would have involved wearing a headset so the audio would only have been heard by me. Go figure.
Lat night I turned on MSNBC..ED Scultz..he was on the ground all night in Wisconsin..and I wanted to see him deflate....but it looked liked a Dem convention/union meeting/SDS reunion...the most biased thing I’ve ever seen...
???
I always considered cnn to be 1984 direct-tv...
here in L.A. County, ALL LA Fitness gyms are on CNN, and because I hate them, I have my MP3 player to drown out the leftard morons. Even Gold’s Gym have the same policies.
Carl’s Jr usually has ESPN. Someone told me that someone complained that it was CNN all the time, so they went ESPN because they couldn;t stand FOX.
Do you still have liberal friends? We gave up on ours about two years ago and will likely never see them again. When we bought our last house, we knocked on neighbors doors and found out whether our neighbors were liberals or not. We believe that liberals are genetically challenged. Your posting here was a good one...keep up the good work and don’t bow to the liberal masters.
It’s not just CNN vs. Fox News.
It’s CNN vs. ESPN, Lifetime, TBS, or Jerry Springer on a local station. Why are they choosing CNN out of 145 channels?
I presume they are getting paid so that CNN does not drop totally out of the ratings. Or at least I think you’d have to pay someone to get them to watch CNN these days.
The one liberal friend I had with whom I could have an honest conversation died a couple of years ago. And sadly it was due to some lifestyle choices which are common to Liberals.
Very sad about your friend. Unfortunately, choices sometimes have consequences.
Back to the topic at hand, Fox News is the only news that I watch on TV, but because they ARE fair and balanced it often makes my blood boil because they give so much equal time to liberals such as Juan Williams. When I get fed up, I just turn off the TV and come back to FreeRepublic, because it is NOT fair and balanced. Its just right.
If CNN is on at an airport, or a hotel lobby, etc. I simply get up and leave the area. I will not watch or listen to it EVER.
