Over at the Belmont Club blog, one poster had a good observation:
To many Americans the Second Amendment has always been interpreted as a mechanism for the citizens to be able to revolt against a government that oppresses them. This is true, but it really misses or deflects the point.

An armed citizenry can defend itself, as is their right to do. When the government is allowed to take a total monopoly on the use of force they don’t have to actively oppress you. They can let the barbarians do that and cow you by their intentional failure to protect you. You want police protection do you? You dirty peasants didn’t pass the last bond issue to raise the salaries of the public servants so we are going to quit responding to petty things like burglaries. That will teach you. And don’t dare hurt a burglar, or you will go to jail.

Do you see the pattern?
