The most powerful man on Earth?
Washington Post ^ | 8-8-11 | Dana Milbank

Posted on 08/08/2011 5:13:01 PM PDT by rawhide

A familiar air of indecision preceded President Obama’s pep talk to the nation.

The first draft of his schedule for Monday contained no plans to comment on the downgrading of the U.S. credit rating by Standard & Poor’s. Then the White House announced that he would speak at 1 p.m. A second update changed that to 1:30. At 1:52, Obama walked into the State Dining Room to read his statement. Judging from the market reaction, he should have stuck with his original instinct.

“No matter what some agency may say, we’ve always been and always will be a AAA country,” Obama said, as if comforting a child who had been teased by the class bully.

When he began his speech (and as cable news channels displayed for viewers), the Dow Jones industrials stood at 11,035. As he talked, the average fell below 11,000 for the first time in nine months, en route to a 635-point drop for the day, the worst since the 2008 crash.

It’s not exactly fair to blame Obama for the rout: Almost certainly, the markets ignored him. And that’s the problem: The most powerful man in the world seems strangely powerless, and irresolute, as larger forces bring down the country and his presidency.

The economy crawls, the credit rating falls, the markets plunge, and a helicopter packed with U.S. special forces goes down in Afghanistan. Two thirds of Americans say the country is on the wrong track (and that was before the market swooned), Obama’s approval rating is 43 percent, and activists on his own side are calling him weak.

Yet Obama plods along, raising gobs of cash for his reelection bid — he was scheduled to speak at two DNC fundraisers Monday night — (snip)

S&P is not “some agency”, regardless of what some president says. Of course, I am just some poster here.

Note this is the Washington Post not the Washington Times.

Note this is Dana Milbank, not Charles Krauthammer.

My the worm has certainly turned.

Once the feeding frenzy starts it can’t be stopped.

I had a feeling before the Kenyan came out this morning that he was going to finally screw the pooch.

I think he did.

I cannot find one article anywhere that praises his speech. His presidency is kaput. Let’s just hope the next president is a real conservative

I heard part of Zer0’s speech — after he arrived nearly one hour late — to a salivating media. [Poor media types. The longer the wait, the more worked-up and twitchy they became — blatherus interruptus.]

When the Great Zer0 did arrive, it was more of the same old tax the rich and work with us to screw America and the American people Bravo Sierra.

This Marxist's one note, tone deaf screed is getting tiresome. I kept saying, “Put a gag in it, Barry, or get new writers.”

Well, don't go by me. I still can't believe an inexperienced, petulant marxist/muslim who doesn't have an ounce of sense and is a complete economic illiterate was elected president. But that's just me.

And, I think you may be right. He hid out all weekend and then read this statement. He could have phoned it in, or just had Carney release it. Why appear and show everybody how bad you look? I think he is done. Wouldn't it be nice if he resigned?

“Wouldn’t it be nice if he resigned?”

Never though we’d be hoping for “Slow Joe” to take the reins?
Would be a 200% I.Q. boost at least.

He should hire me.

Hey , cut the guy some slack. The plan was not supposed to go down this way.

Obama counted on having firm control of both the House and Senate to allow Obama to keep spending enough to pay off his voter base, hide the severity of the fiscal crisis we face to give America a false sense of economic security and normalcy, and delay the collapse he and the Congressional Democrats have engineered until after he had won the 2012 election.

He would then have 4 years of uninterrupted economic crisis to use to tear down the old America and rebuild the new Socialist America in his image. If he played his cards right, he could even ended up a Hugo Chavez’ esque President For Life

Francis Piven told him it was all gonna be so easy

The crisis came 2 years too soon and he needs to face the voters in a little over a year.

He has no idea what to do now - he can't ram through his game plan for emergency measures to create a Socialistic Dictatorship until after he has been elected to a second term.

Don't count on it. His ego will probably force him to barricade himself in the WH after 2012. They'll probably have to drag his sorry ass out of there.

I and my coworkers listened to his speech. When he explained to us that our soldiers ‘come from all over’, we said, “No s#!+, Sherlock!” How stupid is this man???????

“...resigns”

I was just talking about this with someone. I would actually prefer he stay in office. He is going to bring the whole Democratic ship down with him! Thank God!

“Note this is Dana Milbank...”

I have to borrow your opening and add what I was thinking, Dana Milbank and not Jennifer Rubin, who also noted the (evidently) weird head pivoting.

This and the questions from other MSMers quoted...

WOW, just wow.

Jimmeh Carter himself never had it THIS bad.

This is like Jerry Ford WIP (whip inflation now) or David Dinkens “don’t diss your sis” level of USELESS.
