Perry as a (Very Conservative) Democrat
Texas Tribune ^ | July 25, 2011 | Mark P. Jones

Posted on 08/07/2011 2:50:09 PM PDT by Clairity

If Gov. Rick Perry decides to throw his hat into the presidential ring, we can expect enhanced interest in his Democratic past.

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, the analysis suggests Perry did not leave the Democratic Party so much as it left him, although compared to Reagan, Perry was (ideologically) much less of a Democrat to begin with.

During Perry's first term (1985-87) in the Texas House his voting record located him as the 12th most conservative Democrat, rising to 10th in the 1987-89 session and 7th in 1989. From the very beginning, Perry was clearly a conservative outlier within his party, with his roll call voting behavior placing him in the conservative wing of the conservative faction of the Democratic Party.

Perry is strong on the 2nd Amendment, border security, he signed the “cut, cap, and balance” pledge, against the excessive EPA regulations.

More proof this is not true!

December, 2006 - Speaking out against walled borders, in favor of open borders and guest workers
http://governor.state.tx.us/news/speech/9984/
We have just concluded an election year that was heavy on immigration rhetoric and light on comprehensive solutions. Divisive appeals do nothing to solve problems even if they do score temporary political points. It is time Washington got one of the central messages of this election: when it comes to immigration and border security- get the job done! We cannot wall off the border and solve anything. Strategic fencing in certain urban areas to direct the flow of traffic makes sense, but building a wall across the entire border is a preposterous idea. Imagine the sheriff of Presidio County, Danny Dominguez, and his four or five deputies patrolling 130 miles of a border wall. The only thing a wall would most certainly accomplish is an increase in the ladder making industry.

Washington needs to seek real solutions that protect our economy that take migrant workers out of the shadows by giving then an ID and allowing them to cross freely, and that at the same time recognizes the rule of law and the importance of not rewarding those who break our laws. Our economy is impacted greatly by migrant workers. Let’s create a guest worker program that takes those workers off the black market and that legitimizes their economic contributions without doing the same for their citizenship. I would rather know who it is that crosses our border legally to work, than not know who it is that crosses our border illegally to work. We can have immigration reform that doesn’t compromise our security, and we can have security that doesn’t compromise our economy. That’s my goal, and it is time Washington shared it.

Image at 5 - That never happened. Sarah Palin never campaigned for Rick Perry, let alone insist that “He does what is right regardless of whether it is popular. He walks the walk of a true conservative".

You see, if one pretends these things never occurred it is easier to cope.
Life in the Palin Hive does not always parallel reality.

Gov. Perry on Border Security

We cannot have homeland security without border security. Under Gov. Perry, Texas has been a leader on border security while the federal government has faltered. Under his leadership, Texas has put more boots on the ground, more technology to use, and more targeted operations to dramatically reduce all crime along the border.

— Surge Operations. Starting in June 2006, state-funded operations have committed resources to strategic areas, resulting in an average of 65 percent reduction of all crime, including rape, murder, human trafficking and narcotics smuggling in our border communities. In 2009, the 81st Legislature reapproved funding for border operations, dedicating more than $110 million for the second consecutive session.

— Transnational Gang Initiative. In response to a rising tide of gang violence in Texas communities, Gov. Perry secured funding for enhanced anti-gang efforts all across the state. On Feb. 26, 2009, Gov. Rick Perry sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano requesting the deployment of an additional 1,000 National Guard soldiers to the Texas-Mexico border and has yet to receive a response. Gov. Perry reiterated his request and concerns in a letter to President Barack Obama on Aug. 21, 2009.

— Ranger Recon. In September, Gov. Perry launched the Ranger Recon security initiative, which utilizes Ranger Reconnaissance Teams to tap the specialized criminal intelligence and apprehension capabilities of the Texas Rangers to protect Texans who live in remote areas of the border and whose lives and property are threatened by criminals coming across the border.

Thanks Clairity, I’ve saved a link for my FR file.

Perry is strong on .... border security

Absolutely not!

Your statement is falsifiable based on just Rick Perry's performance (as opposed to his rhetorical posturing) based on the outcomes of the general session and his special session just ended, alone.

He had an opportunity to end the "sanctuary cities" policies of a number of major city administrations, including Houston's where we have one or two policemen per year murdered by illegal aliens carrying firearms. He conspicuously failed to do so, he had an identifiable motive in failing to do so, and in fact he refused to lift a finger while his major financial backers picked the relevant bill(s) apart while the Lege was in session.

His early rhetorical support for a strong border policy was just that -- an oratorical imposture.

Perry Signs MOU to Authorize National Guard Troops on Border

Quite the opposite Clairity.

You falsely claim that Rick Perry is strong on Border Issues when quite the contrary, he is at best mediocre and at worst, taking into consideration he has come out against AZ1070 and a Border Fence, and was a big supporter of granting Amnesty (Making them legal) to those already in the country.

You refuse to address the other side of Rick "Finger-In-The-Wind" Perry on this issue, because it hurts your cause.

Perry vows to abolish sanctuary cities; detailed governor’s schedule surfaces, sort of.

‘Sanctuary cities’ ban on Legislature’s agenda now

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/7600228.html

“Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday added a ban on “sanctuary cities” to the agenda of the special session, in which legislative rules favor its passage despite opposition from outnumbered Democrats concerned about issues including racial profiling.”

The Texas Legislature voted it down.

Updated: The Sanctuary Cities Blame Game

“Unfortunately, SB1 Conference Committee Chairman Robert Duncan ultimately refused to allow language related to the ban of sanctuary cities into the final version of Senate Bill 1,” Perry wrote in his statement. “Because of this action, the special session will not provide our peace officers with the discretion they need to adequately keep Texans safe from those that would do them harm.”

I think her own words should have real meaning and I have many pictures of her campaigning for Perry. He also made her an honorary Citizen of Texas, lol.

I was startled last week when she was on Hannity’s show and he asked her if she was going to run. She said, “for practical reasons, still haven’t made up my mind.”

On Feb. 26, 2009, Gov. This example is choice. Perry wrote a letter to an Administration he knew would be hostile and uncooperative, which is a pose. He knew no response would be forthcoming, so it was a safe addition to Perry's "gestural politics".

IN FACT, all your cited examples date from 2006 and later, years after Perry took office, and represent drops in the bucket of Texas's need, at a time when uncontrolled immigration, fostered and fomented in the first place by Perry's major backers in construction and unskilled-labor employment industries, had been putting Texas through the wringer of education costs, crime costs, incarceration costs, and the loss of taxes to the cash economy for more than 25 years.

Your statements of support for Perry's reputation on border issues actually work to support his critics, when you inspect the substance of the claims.

You claimed Perry didn’t want to eliminate sancuary cities. I PROVED you wrong.

You are the one making false and misleading statements against Perry.

Your own latest post, quoting when Perry asked for help from the Obama administration proves YOU wrong.

[Clairity's source] “Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday added a ban on “sanctuary cities” to the agenda of the special session....
The Texas Legislature voted it down.

With David Dewhurst in the Lite Guv's chair, and Joe Straus holding the gavel in the Texas house, Perry knew this was a safe play -- and a total imposture.

If he were playing for keeps on "sanctuary cities", he'd have lobbied against Straus's return as Speaker (what, Straus would bork his bills or something?) and he'd have got his hands dirty fighting for his measures. If they were really "his" in the first place.

The whole point is, he posed and didn't fight. This is classic Perry, and about all anyone can expect of him for the rest of his political career.

Pinging some more Texians .... y'all might want to wade in here one way or the other.

>>>Lol, she is an honorary citizen of Texas now and I think she’s pushing him!<<<

I’d say there’s a good chance that that’s exactly what’s happening!

.............................................................

Two major names remain on the 2012 bench. Each has a giant persona, comes from a giant state, and has a giant following.

Yes, it’s Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Their political friendship, while somewhat recent, seems real — so real that it would be easy to imagine one endorsing the other if only one of them would jump into the race. That would give an instant charge of credibility and buzz to the endorsee, and likely set either Palin or Perry as the Tea Party favorite.
