If Gov. Rick Perry decides to throw his hat into the presidential ring, we can expect enhanced interest in his Democratic past.
To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, the analysis suggests Perry did not leave the Democratic Party so much as it left him, although compared to Reagan, Perry was (ideologically) much less of a Democrat to begin with.
During Perry's first term (1985-87) in the Texas House his voting record located him as the 12th most conservative Democrat, rising to 10th in the 1987-89 session and 7th in 1989. From the very beginning, Perry was clearly a conservative outlier within his party, with his roll call voting behavior placing him in the conservative wing of the conservative faction of the Democratic Party.

Rick Perry is George Bush warmed over.
He is an opportunist. He is a phony Tea Party supporter. He is milquetoast. He is just another pretty face. He is a politician who will go along with the establishment and will not take risks. He will not stand up and fight for our cause.
If Rick Perry becomes president, it will be extremely counter-productive to the Tea Party movement.

If he had changed parties DURING the Reagan years I would have a higher opinion of him. Changing the year the Berlin Wall fell and after Gore lost is too easy.
So he is a compassionate liberal, that supports amnesty, and toll road and etc., a bush bot rerun, no thanks.
Well I don’t agree with you sir. Some of the most conservative republicans were once conservative democrats. Gov. Perry may not be perfect, but who is? My first choice is Sarah Palin. Will she run and can she get the nomination remains to decided. I can live with Perry, and will support him enthusiastically when the time comes.
The problem with this is that he chose in 1984, in the middle of the Reagan Revolution, when Reagan was winning Texas with 64% of the vote, to become a Democrat politician and run for office.
If that isn’t enough, in Reagan’s last year, when Reagan’s Texan veep was running for the Presidency against Al Gore, Perry clamored for the position of Al Gore’s campaign leader, and fought to get a man with a 9 ACU rating into Reagan’s seat as President.

Perry is strong on the 2nd Amendment, border security, he signed the “cut, cap, and balance” pledge, against the excessive EPA regulations.

Have you been to all the pro-life rallies that the Governor has attended?
Have you received help from Governor Perry when you needed to pass a pro-life, pro-family, pro-business bill?

In the ensuing years, he’s been tried by nearly 11 years as Governor, where he has championed conservative causes, even when criticized and sued as he was over yesterday’s Response.

Yeah but after the democrats had become so radically left in the 1960s? Did they become democrat leaders in the middle of the Reagan Revolution? Were they campaigning against the Reagan Revolution AFTER Reagan, and trying to get Al Gore to replace him?
You make good points, but I don’t think the vast majority of democrats got so radical until the late 1980s. Algore is a lowdown rotten sob and always has been, but he didn’t used to be insane and was pro-life until he realized (just like Jesse Jackson) that he was going nowhere polically unless he bought in to the feminaza position.
Perry’s support of him was purely political just like Algores. That may not make him stand out morally, but I believe the man sincerely has had a change of heart. Like I said before I’m for Sarah, but if its Perry, I’m OK with that.
You sound like me, if it comes down to the usual fare, then Perry is probably better than the usual fare, but he sure isn’t a Reagan like game changer, and we know who is.
OTOH, Reagan only got his agenda passed because a lot of Southern Dems broke with their leaders and supported it. It was a different era.

Perry Signs MOU to Authorize National Guard Troops on Border

Rick Perry today signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) authorizing the deployment of National Guard Troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as part of Operation Jump Start, under which the troops will support federal border security officers. The Governors of Arizona, California and New Mexico have also signed the MOU.
“The National Guard is already a part of Texas’ border security strategy, Operation Rio Grande, which brings together federal, state and local law enforcement and the National Guard to conduct joint operations to better protect Texans from border-related crime and violence,†Perry said. In February, Perry launched Operation Rio Grande, a comprehensive border security strategy that gives the state a leading role in coordinating intelligence and law enforcement assets within an 80,000 square mile region.
National Guard troops operating in Texas as part of Operation Jump Start will remain under Perry’s command, although the federal government will cover the cost of the mission. Troop activities may include detection and monitoring, engineering, transportation, logistics, vehicle dismantling, analysis, road building and language support. The temporary deployment is expected to be phased out as new Border Patrol agents are hired.
Operation Jump Start planners immediately will be dispatched to the border to lay the groundwork for the full deployment of guard troops. About 2,300 Texas guardsmen and airmen are expected to be involved, although troop levels and deployment details are still being finalized.”
