U.S. official: Killed forces were on Afghanistan rescue mission
CNN ^ | 8/6/11 | David Ariosto and Barbara Starr

Posted on 08/06/2011 2:31:09 PM PDT by truthandlife

Twenty-five U.S. special forces killed early Saturday in Afghanistan were on a mission to rescue another team of military personnel pinned down by insurgents, a U.S. military official told CNN.

The helicopter that went down in eastern Afghanistan carried 30 U.S. military members, including 22 Navy SEALs and three other special forces. They were part of a "quick reaction force" sent in to pick up others engaged in a fierce firefight, the official said.

In the single deadliest incident since the start of the decade-long Afghan war, the Army Chinook carrying a team of U.S. special forces and U.S. and Afghan soldiers went down in Wardak province.

Insurgents are believed to have shot down the helicopter, a military official said.

The majority of the Navy SEALs who died belonged to the same covert unit that conducted the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May, though they were not the same men, the official said.

"It's a big loss" for the SEALs, one of the officials said. "The numbers are high."

I wonder if all the in-depth reporting on the bin Laden mission gave away too much of our playbook.

Excellent point.

And speaking of "in-depth" reporting, did you notice that CNN only reported that the copter was shot down by the Taliban in the 4th paragraph!

Reread this biased piece of reporting. The writer wants you to think that the copter crashed, and wasn't shot down by the Muslim enemy.

It's just sickening how the MSM covers for the worst human being that ever occupied the White House.

Maybe who they were sent to rescue had just as unique/high skill level. I’ll leave it at that.

omeone set them up to be killed probably. I wonder who????

If you listen, at all, to Alex Jones he predicted this months ago. They had to go because they knew what we all knew--Bin Laden was never in the supposed compound and was never "killed" on Obama's watch.

Funny, the New Yorker just ran a story that is of some interest.

because blackhawks dont carry a platoon at once and SEALS do go in larger groups sometimes, one to secure an area, one to insert

Some might call that theory crazy tinfoil stuff. Not me. I have no problem thinking BO hates our military that much.

Pretty sad state affairs when people can consider the possibility at all, but America is in a pretty sad state.

"Why use a Chinook to do a quick strike rescue? Too big of a slow moving, loud target."

I'm pretty sure the Chinook is one of our fastest military helicopters.

A corrupt government, with an incompetent military, will not win against political (or in the case of Afghanistan) religious, fanatics.

The following AP report confirms what you stated as follows:

The U.S. army had intended to hand over its Combat Outpost Tangi to Afghan National Security Forces in April,....... but the Afghans never established a permanent base there......... "We deemed it not to be stategic and closed it," said coalition spokesman U.S. Army Maj. Jason Waggoner........ "The Taliban went in and occupied it because it was vacant."

The Afghan people, nor their army, nor their government are interested in protecting their own nations people.....and the proof's common place when you speak with the troops. They want us to protect them and continue to take in the mega millions Karsi and his thugs enrich themselves on. It's way past time to bring our guys home and stop this nonsense!

Since the copter to do the rescue was shot down.....did others go in after those who they were intended to rescue??????? Is there any word on them?

Obamas sending into that dump of a nation our best men to pick up the slack when the regular troops leave...this should not happen! As follows from the AP:

“The coalition plans to increase its reliance on ‘special operations’ missions as it reduces the overall number of combat troops.”

We will now change our SOP for rescue missions. We got away with going in pellmell up to now. The enemy, if you give him time to survive, will evolve.

Nuke Iran NOW.

The whole US Govt has Major Hassan moles in it post 2008. Pentagon, Congress, FBI, CIA, DIA, NSA and the list goes on. My guess is this was a set up cause Seal Team 6 supposedly got Bin Laden. At a minimum - intel is being leaked back to the ISI.

Also probably a warning to the Republican leadership. If the SEALs are not safe and if fairground people in WI are not safe then you are not safe.

The entire SEAL team getting on a Chinook with Afghanis. Yeah sure.

Bankrupted the USA, took out the Triple A debt rating and now took out SEAL Team 6. Killing off America’s best and bravest in chicken sh*t wars that became meaningless post 2008.

We and the military are being played folks. Where are all those LTC Lakin haters that used to post here? Lakin knows the score.

I am no expert but SEALS on the ground for two hours and some BS cover story sounds real bad. Let’s pray there are no MIA.

This is the point where a real country picks a Taliban city or town, and makes it disappear. Forever. Then, if they don’t surrender unconditionally. DO IT AGAIN. Sound familiar?

I’m pretty sure the “and three other special forces” were US Air Force CCT Combat Controllers. They can bring more firepower than you can imagine to bear on any spot desired.

You may never know the real story.

This whole thing is beyond a mess. Just as everything else this President puts his hand to. And yet people continue to applaud him.....blinded by their own willful ignorance and stupidity. Would another 9/11 convince them? Nope.

Yes we pray....
