MOSCOW, August 5 (RIA Novosti)
NATO is planning a military campaign against Syria to help overthrow the regime of President Bashar al-Assad with a long-reaching goal of preparing a beachhead for an attack on Iran, Russia's envoy to NATO Dmitry Rogozin said.
The UN Security Council condemned on Wednesday ongoing violence in Syria and urged the country's authorities to stop using force against peaceful protesters, while saying the current situation in the country has not yet called for NATO interference.
"[This statement] means that the planning [of the military campaign] is well underway. It could be a logical conclusion of those military and propaganda operations, which have been carried out by certain Western countries against North Africa," Rogozin said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper published on Friday.
The Russian diplomat pointed out at the fact that the alliance is aiming to interfere only with the regimes "whose views do not coincide with those of the West."

Maybe NATO is pissed at Ghadaffi for firing missiles at the Italian Frigate and British destroyer. Or maybe they really want to get Khamis Ghadaffi, etal and wrap this thing (Libya) up.
This has been expected. We just didn't know when and how. That part is now unfolding. Enemies definitely want to exploit this window of opportunity. Later on, these enemies will be also in economic disasters of their own. Then things will metastasize.
I find it interesting that reports are coming out about the economic troubles that countries are having...........except Russia. Why? We destroyed the USSR economically....is it now their turn?
Russia decided to live on grains and natural resources, and hate the likes of Soros. So far they have lived within their means. However, if their imperial ambition acts up and corruption goes rampant again, they will fare no better than others currently in trouble.
I’ve got the feeling that Putin will take care of any problems. He has no choice if he wants to stay in power. I just find it interesting nobody is talking about Russia.
Because Russia is swimming in cash, that's why. That "destruction of the USSR" that you speak of was like surgery of cancer after which the patient gets better.
USSR was half-dead by 1990, doomed by ineffective economy, lack of leadership, and by peripheral republics that took more than they produced. The dissolution of USSR allowed Russia to change the rules of the game overnight. In particular, republics eagerly went their own way; what happened to them is another interesting study, but the point is that Russia now has 1/3 of the population of the USSR, about 90% of the territory, and most of natural resources. Russia quickly repaid most of the debts and now collects money from energy-starved Europe.
Nothing more reliable than a leftover Soviet news service quoting a Putin appointed Russian diplomat.
Watching the total incompetence on display in Libya, I’m sure the Syrians are shaking in their boots.
Putin is a free-market supporter. That is why Russia is stronger now.
What is up with Libya?
Instead of hunkering down they need to go on the offensive and sink a couple of euro ships.
Come on even the Georgians managed to down some Russian jets in the 2008 war. Get with it Libya.
free market supporter, thats why he’s taking control of the press and TV? He’s been busy trying to throw businessmen who oppose him into prison, or poison/kill them (like independent journalists).
It is a question of degree. He is definitely a strongman on the political front.
