SAN ANGELO — With two guilty verdicts in hand, the state of Texas is pressing ahead into the penalty phase of the Warren Jeffs trial in San Angelo.
After a 10-woman, two-man Tom Green County jury found the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints guilty as charged of one count of sexual assault of a child and one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child, the penalty phase of the trial proceeded almost immediately late Thursday afternoon.
In the penalty phase, prosecution and defense can present arguments, witnesses and evidence for the jury to consider as it deliberates on penalties.
Attorney General Greg Abbott, who was present the first two days of the trial and returned Thursday to hear the verdict, said: "It's a unique case with regard to the crimes involved at the YFZ Ranch. The veil has been pulled back on the sexual assault of so many kids."
Jeffs' support in his own sect has become shaky. Willie Jessop, a former follower of Jeffs who remains a member of the FLDS, spurned the convicted leader.
"Warren Jeffs betrayed his people and the values of his people," Jessop said at the end of Thursday's proceedings. Everyone in the FLDS, he said, "has to take some responsibility."

In discussions about Warren Jeffs and the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) church the topic of “bleeding the beast,” or taking advantage of government money, often comes up. A former polygamist sect member, Laurie Allen, talked about it in an interview on In Session. Allen produced "Banking on Heaven," a documentary about the FLDS under Jeffs’ leadership. During our interview last week, Allen claimed the FLDS collects food stamps and other forms of public assistance because many of the women technically are still single. In the FLDS, multiple women are often “celestially married” to one man, with only one of the women being legally married to their collective husband. That means the other illegitimate wives can collect assistance for themselves and their children.
Allen said the group also collects government assistance for children with disabilities – disabilities she attributes to inbreeding in the FLDS community. She claims “in the state ofArizonaalone, they’re getting between 20 and 30 million dollars a year” and most of the members “are living off taxpayer money.” She interviewed former Attorney General Terry Goddard in her documentary. Goddard told her 80% of the FLDS members are on welfare and more than 4,000 of them have state medical insurance access.
In 2006, CNN’s Randi Kaye wrote a blog detailing how polygamy affects taxpayers. In the blog, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff made a similar assertion, stating "their religious belief is that they'll bleed the beast, meaning the government. They hate the government, so they'll bleed it for everything they can through welfare, tax evasion and fraud."

SALT LAKE CITY— Regardless of whether or not he is convicted in Texas, Warren Jeffs will remain in charge of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
A deadline over who is in control of the corporate entity of the polygamous sect came and went Wednesday, with no new filings or a court order settling the dispute. A former member, William E. Jessop, has challenged Jeffs for the presidency of the Corporation of the President of the FLDS Church. He claims Jeffs relinquished the presidency of the FLDS Church while incarcerated in Utah and awaiting trial on criminal charges here back in 2007.

This guy is just as much of a creep as Jeffs. Jessop is acting surprised at what Jeffs did, when the truth is that everyone, including Jessop knew what Jeffs was doing and allowed it to take place. Jeffs was their “prophet”, appointed by God himself. So everything that Jeffs did was “God's will”. If Jessop takes over, his whims will become "God's will" under the FLDS belief system.
Warren Jeffs' practices will likely continue even though he's behind bars, according to Flora Jessop, who escaped from his polygamist sect when she was just 16 years old.
On Thursday, Jeffs was convicted after less than four hours of jury deliberations of sexually assaulting two underage girls in Texas. He faces the possibility of life in prison.
But Jessop says there are several people "waiting in the wings" to fill Jeffs' leader role in the fringe Mormon sect, including his brother, Lyle Jeffs.
Jessop says Lyle Jeffs will likely take the helm of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) -- and says he will to continue Warren Jeffs' practices if he's not stopped.
"This is not a practice that's going to go away," Jessop said. "I want the American people to understand that this is not the only polygamist group out there, and if we don't stand up and demand accountability from these groups, then it's building. It's growing. It's going to be moving into a neighborhood next to you."

Willy is one of the scarier people that used to surround Jeffs. We used to call him Willy the Thug on some of the threads, as he seemed to play the part of “enforcer.” I’m with you. I don’t believe his innocent, gee, I never knew line.
I think the tape and the rape room they set up with benches around the bed show that, not only should nobody with FLDS be surprised - they were most likely witnesses to the actual child rape.

IOW, they couldn't keep everything a secret during the trial and he wasn't declared innocent.

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) — As a prophet of his polygamist sect, Warren Jeffs documented everything he did, keeping track of every marriage he performed, every young woman he wed, and even recording his intimate moments.
It was those meticulous records — including an audiotape of what prosecutors said was him sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl he'd taken as a bride — that helped authorities secure two child sex assault convictions against the 55-year-old ecclesiastical head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Now, prosecutors hope those same records will help bring a life prison sentence to a man regarded by his followers as God's spokesman on Earth. The West Texas jurors who convicted Jeffs will begin determining his appropriate punishment on Friday, and they'll hear evidence about scores of alleged crimes not mentioned during his trial.
For starters, Jeffs had 78 wives in addition to his legal spouse, and 24 of them were under age 17, said Eric Nichols, lead prosecutor for the Texas Attorney General's office, which is handling the case. Nichols also said he would show that Jeffs committed six other sexual assaults and either witnessed or performed more than 500 polygamist marriages, as well as 67 other sect marriages involving underage girls.

They just had the Texas AG on TRUTV, and from what he said, maybe this time something will actually be done. At least in Texas. I have no hope for Utah.
