A jury has found polygamist religious leader Warren Jeffs guilty of child rape.
Jeffs, the leader of a radical polygamist sect of Mormonism known as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (FLDS), was found guilty of forcing two teenage girls into "spiritual marriage," and fathering a child with one of them when she was 15. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Jeffs, who acted as his own lawyer, called only one witness in his defense. The witness was a fellow member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints who, at Jeffs' direction, read at length from the Book of Mormon. During the trial, Jeffs frequently interrupted testimony.
He ended the trial in silence earlier today, standing mute for nearly half an hour during the time designated for his closing argument.
Every five minutes, District Court Judge Barbara Walther would remind Jeffs of the time. Spectators in the gallery exchanged smiles and odd glances. One security officer did his best to stifle a yawn.
Finally, at the conclusion of the 25 minutes allotted to Jeffs for his summation, Jeffs turned toward the jury with a slight smile and said quietly, "I am at peace."

Absolutely, he's nothing but a sicko criminal.
***but you never know with some juries now***
***hopefully the judge will sentence him to the max***
Having lived in San Angelo, TX more than 3 decades, and still being in touch with the nature of that community, I assure one and all...there has never been any doubt about this outcome. Not a shred or a scintilla of one...
In my state unlikely, but I don't know anything about Texas's policies.
Romney can’t totally disclaim this, the origins of his Mormon faith was reeking in adult men taking child brides, just like Jeffs......perhaps that changed over the years, but that is still part of the history of all Mormons. I hope this means more and more of them leave those cults and get themselves free.
Yes, I just wonder if that’s likely. I kind of bet not, but we’ll see.
You said it well in calling him a monster, that’s all he is.
Only if he was a PRETTY 45 year old woman...
I sure hope this scumbag enjoys his new comgregation. I’m betting 3-4 of them at a minimum will be enjoying their new “pastor”
but even those famous cases that are in solitary can get offed in the big house.
He should have attempted a change of venue to New York or other same-sex marriage jurisdiction to make a claim of equivalency.
Probably would have been found not guilty.
I know you’re right and people with any common sense at all know it also.
I guess I’ve become cynical about justice with some of these trials. I didn’t follow the Anthony trial closely at all but I did follow the Simpson trial closely and both should have been slam dunks. Still, we have the finest justice system in the world.
I can’t rightly say I do either. I mean, it wouldn’t seem like Texas to be namby pamby but these days, who knows?!
True.
Mitt’s Mexican roots. Mitt’s father, George Romney, was born in Mexico.
Yes. The girls parents. They definitely deserve a decade or two themselves.
Im not a fan of Romney, but I bet the MSM starts associating the two Mormons together soon.
Not until after they get their boy Romney the nomination. The gloves will come off then
The sick dynamics of the FLDS is a mirror image of Islamic families; Extra unwanted males dumped on societies, pedophelia, wife and child beating, marrying cousins, male dominance, inbreeding/genetic deformities, poverty, insular tribal fear & hatred of outsiders and predilection to cheat outsiders.
The justice system breaks down in certain situations.
This wouldn’t be one of them.
The community of San Angelo, including citizens and the judicial system especially the judges, would not be part of that problem.
Remember the Houston woman who drowned her 5 children? I do not believe a San Angelo trial would have found her not guilty by reason of insanity, as a Houston one did.
