Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, announced Thursday that Democratic and Republican leaders have "been able to broker a bipartisan compromise between the House and the Senate" to fully fund the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Pubbies have to take credit for every one of these deals, saying the shape they took wasn’t entirely to our liking, because we only have one house of Congress, yada yada — and repeat this over and over, because elections are won in the middle. After the victory, that’s when you pass your agenda items. That’s how the Demwits operate, and it works, obviously. Thanks Perdogg.
That’ll cost us.

Uh, right. Let’s argue over Constitutionally enabled Federal functions but don’t touch the unauthorized welfare state programs, designed only to create dependency classes to buy votes.
“Uh, right. Lets argue over Constitutionally enabled Federal functions but dont touch the unauthorized welfare state programs, designed only to create dependency classes to buy votes.”
I don’t see how or where the FAA is a constitutionally authorized Federal program.
As far as I am concerned airport employees should be private, airports should be supported by their own user-fees, the VOR system is obsolete anyway, and the States should make their own rules of the air insofar as conflict between aircraft is concerned.
The Only thing the Feds even have the sliest claim of a right to do is set terms for interstate airline travel. NOT run it.
ditto. GOP caved, as usual. I’m so tired of the crybabies. We need real men with spines.
Isn’t that one are you could reasonably call involving “interstate commerce”? Flights across state lines?
Yep, and it's called a 'signing statement'. Unforunately he is not the first POTUS to do that, That last POTUS was famous for doing it and Republican-first-ers thought it was a brilliant leadership move by him evidently assuming Republicans could never lose another presidential election after him.
Wonderful..............
This is why I gave up (stupid) Republican Koolaid.
Liberals are similar to these Republicans first-ers begging Obama to raise the debt ceiling by himself, as if a later Republican POTUS would never use it as a precedent.
Bush set a lot of precidents................ALL BAD
“Isnt that one are you could reasonably call involving interstate commerce? Flights across state lines?”
Where is the commerce?
More importantly, how is his pomegranate tree?
According to the article, Obama didn't even have to take the law into his own hands; LaHood already had the authority to "grant waivers to affected community airports, which would effectively exempt them from the subsidy cuts, according to the Senate Democratic leadership aide."
To me, the main issue boils down to old fashioned pork, which we should not have budgeted before, and we clearly can't afford now. There is also the card check issue. It's not clear to me whether the house bill tries to fix that problem.
Yep, I read it about a half hour ago.
Of course this House FAA bill could have removed that power to grant exemptions for this specific bill funding, but it didnt. So once again, the Republicans take a symbolic stand. But their heart is in the right place, right?
On the positive side, didnt Dems get stuck with the union provisions?
One interesting point about this “Rockefeller” aviation bill. Aside from the ridiculous “card check” union voting takeover (which says a company can be unionized if 51% of the number of employees who voted, voted for unionization- a complete corruption of the secret ballot), there is another little item:
Jay Rockefeller has a large trout ranch in WV about an hour out of Charleston. This subsidy covers a special airport built just for “fly in” guests to the exclusive resort. An airport that has few flights, mostly empty, each one of which is subsidized. That is an empty plane flies each day fully subsidized even if it runs empty.
Sweet little deal for the “poor old Rockefeller”. This is true in other areas of the country. Always some high roller trying to get govt. subsidy for their own private/public airstrip.
Weren’t the FAA the ones threatening to ground flights if Texas enacted their anti-groping bill? Keeping them non-funded sounds like a great way to actually get stuff done.
How many of these government agencies exist for no other reasons than A) to micro-manage things that don’t need it and B) provide jobs to people who would never get hired anywhere else?
That is a Constitutional impossiblity. There is no line item veto. The “white house” can’t do this, and neither can the present...dent.
This is not about 74000 FAA workers either, as they try to state. This would be perhaps an aggregate of federal construction project union workers (airports of dubious importance as well as some major ones).
Murtha’s airport has 3 flights and noone there at all. He got 200 million of “stimulus” money before he died.
The place has an 8 million dollar radar site that is UNSTAFFED.
Bless your heart! I was wondering if anyone had any clue as to what this is all about. Since there are few who seem to read the entire article, I will post the pertinent information.
“A larger dispute behind the scenes also was a cause for the inaction, and the deal announced Thursday does not address it.
Republicans oppose a recent National Mediation Board decision backed by Democrats that makes it easier for airline employees to unionize.
The board’s ruling made passage of a vote to unionize dependent on getting more than 50% support of those voting. For example, if a company has 1,000 workers but only 200 take part in the vote to unionize, the rule change would meant only 101 “yes” votes were needed for it to pass.
Under old rules, more than 50% of all workers eligible to vote — or in this example 501 “yes” votes — would have been required for it to pass. Workers who didn’t cast ballots were counted as having voted “no,” making it more difficult for supporters to succeed.”
It’s CARD CHECK...that’s the issue.
