Oregon Rep. David Wu resigns; candidates scramble to replace him

WASHINGTON -- Rep. David Wu resigned from office Wednesday, releasing a statement that he has officially ended his job as a member of Congress.

The action kicks off what is expected to be a wide-open race for his replacement. It also brings to an inglorious close to Wu's tumultuous 14 years representing Oregon's 1st Congressional District.

"Serving as a U.S. Congressman has been the greatest honor of my life," Wu said in a statement accompanying his resignation announcement, effective a minute before midnight. "There is no other job where you get up each day and ask, 'How can I try to make the world a better place today?'"

But, he said, "there comes a time to hand on the privilege of elected office--and that time has come."

Wu's departure allows Gov. John Kitzhaber to start the timeline for a special election to replace him. The plan, according to spokesman Tim Raphael, is to call for a special primary election to coincide with an already scheduled election Nov. 8, as a way to save money. That would be followed by a special general election on Jan. 31, 2012.

"Wu continued to collect his $174,000 annual salary while in office, including more than $3,300 since he first announced he intended to resign. And because he stayed for the debt ceiling vote on Aug. 1, he will maintain health insurance for the rest of the month, plus 31 days to transition to the federal government's temporary plan.

Wu could earn more than $1 million from his congressional pension plan and benefits over the course of his lifetime, according to an analysis by the National Taxpayers Union. "

“There is no other job where you get up each day and ask, ‘How can I try to make the world a better place today?’”

Wrong. Doing any job should make one ask that. Typical DC arrogance.

Oh and he voted for that mess to this week. FREEPERS will still stick up for him though.

Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
Are you crazy are you high
Or just an ordinary guy

What, you don’t think throwing felines in the air, hearing them joyfully meow, watching their cute paws bounce around, all the while cheating certain mauling death can’t make the world a better place? Well, you’re right. But, still a good idea asking.

effective a minute before midnight

Not a Minute too Soon. It's not fast enough to give these Liberal/Progressives the boot, out the door, as fast as possible.
