Academy award-winning actor Matt Damon said he is "so disgusted" with what's happening in Washington over the debt limit, claiming that the Tea Party is "willing to drive it all off a cliff" and adding that it's "criminal" the wealthy are not paying higher taxes.
"I'm so disgusted man. I mean, no, I don't know what you do in the face of that kind of intransigence. You know, so my heart does go out to the President. He is dealing with a lot," Damon said in an exclusive interview at the "Save Our Schools March" in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.
When asked if he agrees with President Obama's call for a "balanced approach" as part of a deal to raise the debt limit, Damon said, "Yes, the wealthy are paying less than they've paid in any time else, certainly in my lifetime."
He continued, "It's criminal that like, you know, so little is asked of people who are getting so much, I mean, I don't mind paying more. I really don't mind paying more taxes. I'd rather pay for taxes than cut like 'Reading is Fundamental' or 'Head Start' or some of these programs that are really helping kids. I mean, why not? This is the greatest country in the world. Is it that much worse if you pay 6 percent more in taxes? Give me a break. You know, look at what you get for it. You get to be American."
Damon did not say the highest percentage he would be willing to pay in taxes but argued for tax reform.
"I mean, why not raise it per million bucks? Right? And then cap it somewhere," he said.
Damon also said those making over $250,000 per year are not job creators.
"Nobody went and started a business with their Bush tax cut. You know, I don't know who would believe something that just defies common sense so no, that's no. I was against those tax cuts. I thought they were ridiculous. So little is asked of the upper class anyway, you know. I mean, what percent of them or their kids are fighting in any of these wars?" he said.
Damon also called the Tea Party "completely intransigent" in terms of the debt ceiling debate.
"It's true. They are absolutely willing to drive it all off a cliff. They mean what they say, that's for sure," he said.
If you think some nameless, faceless bureaucrat can spend your money more wisely than yourself, why don't you just turn over 100% of your income?
As for me, I believe I can benefit far more people by my spending decisions than President Clouseau.
The irony is that he was an English major at Harvard.
Tax The Rich? Good Luck With That
And a quote...
It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
Mark Twain
If these wealthy celbs are so concerned about the “rich” paying “their fair share” - they should set the example by voluntarily increasing their own tax payments Come on Matt - just write an extra $1 million check to Uncle Obama. Show us how much you think the system is unfair.
I have never quite understood the “progressive tax system”. The more money you make, the higher percentage OF THAT INCOME you pay. So someone who makes $1million per year pays a higher percentage of their income than someone who makes $200K, which pays a higher percentage of their income than someone who makes $100K. And of course, those who make under 40K (depending on their family/dependent status) may pay nothing in income tax.
This is why I just don’t understand why either the flat tax or the fair tax are so “evil” - they just allow everyone to share in the nation’s expense. Everyone pays taxes that are equal (what happened to “equal protection under the law”?).
Why should there be a penalty for being more successful and working harder?
I hate the rich too Matt. You’re rich.
Yes, he should let us know how much taxes he has actually paid.
Hey Matt, feel free to send most of your income to the US Treasury, nobody’s stopping you. Even better send it straight to the WH, Obongo can add it to the rest of his ‘stash’ that he has stolen from taxpayers.
Thank you :-)
I couldn’t find that picture/quote.
I think that’s an old link, the new one says:

Why not let the regime take it all and redistribute according to need?

That’s the plan, sheesh, give them time, he needs at least another term to make that happen.
...fer sure...
“Save Our Schools march??”
Didn’t that have about 992,000 short of the goal of a million?
I want to see a 100% tax on entertainers “for the chill..run” and a 1000% tax on newsprint “for the environment”
Well, pony up, Mattie ... no one says you have to stop at the required amount. Add as much as you want ... you're rich.
Yet another dipsh** actor who’s at a loss with words without his pre-written script.
I always find it amazing how the same parasites in the Political/Media class who tell us they can reduce smoking by raising taxes on tobacco, turn right around and tell us that raising taxes on income has no impact on economic activity.
I love Saving Pvt Ryan but I wished he was killed in it. And no, out of the ensemble cast (Diesel, Hanks, Sizemore, Ed Burns), he was the loose end and un-talented one of the cast.
I wonder why he doesnt just write the gubmint a check since he believes they can spend it better than him any way.
