The new law allows the tribal court to issue a marriage license to two unmarried people, regardless of their sex, if theyre at least 18 years old and at least one of them is enrolled in the tribe. Leonard Forsman, chairman of the Suquamish Tribe, wants to be sure people understand the tribes stance:
We are open and tolerant, and we want to make sure our members are offered the opportunity to be happy and free in their lives. This lined up with our values as a tribe. We dont discriminate.

This state does not recognize a marriage certificate from a tribe. I got divorced in a rez court here and they never accepted the courts’ divorce papers. For 5 years I thought I was divorced, until I tried to get married again and found out I was still married all those years.
Won’t mean anything outside the reservation borders.

Actually Lenny, you do discriminate, since one of the “happy couple” has to be enrolled in the tribe.
