Drought exposes Columbia debris in Lake Nacogdoches

The state's worst drought since the 1950s has led to the recovery in East Texas of a large piece of debris from space shuttle Columbia, which disintegrated over there nearly a decade ago.

Officials in Nacogdoches made the discovery Friday as waters in Lake Nacogdoches receded during a relentless drought that began last October.

“The lower water level has exposed a larger than normal area on the northern side of the lake,” said Nacogdoches Police Department Sgt. Greg Sowell.

The Nacogdoches officials sent photos to NASA and the space agency confirmed the debris on Tuesday as a fuel tank that was part of the shuttle's electrical power system.

“It's been awhile since we've had something this large found from Columbia,” said Lisa Malone, a NASA spokeswoman.

This 4-feet in diameter sphere found was found in Lake Nacogdoches, Texas on Monday, as a drought has lowered the water level. The container-like object is likely from space shuttle Columbia

Looks to me like it’s already hatched. I’d be looking for whatever crawled out of it.

That’s definitely a pod from The Body Snatchers. No question.

Has anyone said you just don’t seem yourself lately? You might not be yourself!

The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.

‘Who are you?’ said the Caterpillar.

This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, ‘I—I hardly know, sir, just at present— at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.’

‘What do you mean by that?’ said the Caterpillar sternly. ‘Explain yourself!’

‘I can’t explain myself, I’m afraid, sir’ said Alice, ‘because I’m not myself, you see.’

‘I don’t see,’ said the Caterpillar.

Free Republic was documentably the first place where the Columbia disaster was reported. As I remember, a FReeper watching in CA (or somewhere out West) commented on how the re-entry didn’t look right.

It is quite a shame that we could not reliably do that now for the world at large, as the timestamp clock has been off ~15 minutes for ages.
