GRIFFITH STATEMENT ON DEBT LIMIT DEAL (VA-9)
Office of Congressman Morgan Griffith ^ | August 1, 2011 | Congressman Morgan Griffith

Posted on 08/01/2011 5:15:39 PM PDT by Virginia Ridgerunner

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today regarding his vote in opposition to the new version of the Budget Control Act of 2011:

“Last week I made the difficult decision to compromise and voted for Speaker Boehner’s plan. While the Boehner plan was not perfect, it was a realistic approach and a step in the right direction. Among other things, it required passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution before a second increase in the debt ceiling.

“However, the legislation before us today was not quite as good. By contrast, today’s deal only requires a Balanced Budget Amendment to be voted on – not passed. I hope the Democrat controlled Senate will pass a Balanced Budget Amendment as a common sense solution to solve America’s debt problem, but it is far from certain. Additionally, there is a provision which, if there is congressional inaction, would allow President Obama to effectively raise the debt ceiling an additional $1.2 trillion, triggering an equal amount of blind cuts.

“After thoroughly reviewing the legislation and hearing from constituents, I came to the conclusion that I should not vote for this bill.”

He should have voted NO when it counted. To late. Too late...

What are you talking about? Are you saying that he should have voted no to the Boehner Bill, which didn’t pass anyway, and voted for this one? Really?

I just saw her appearance on the Floor, God bless her. I'm sure this will be met with scorn, but she was obviously Coached to say Thank You, and she did that a mile a second, saying apparently nothing else.

I have ZERO doubt she is not mentally capable of performing her duty at this point in time. RATS will prop her up...attach the obvious as she runs for reelection against NO ONE as it's a no win situation for a Republican.

Oh, I see, he “voted FOR it before he voted AGAINST it”.

Griffith should have vote NO on both. He didn't. He was one of the weasels who was pushed to victory by the Southwest VA TEA Party over Boucher, and then caved to Boehner the other night.

Yep. The passage of the Boehner bill last week is what created the opportunity for this monstrosity. The idea last week was that Boehner sold a bill of goods that the House pass his bill and put the pressure on the Senate to act. Well, the Senate already said that bill would be tabled, and was literally right after the House vote. Then Boehner, Reid and Obama put the finishing touches on their crap sandwich over the weekend...putting all the pressure right back on the Republicans in House to HAVE to pass something on the final day. Last week, was the time to stand strong for either CCB or something else.

Yep, looked like Democrats were ready to pounce on voting yes if Republican votes didn’t come through today.

THe need for Boehner to add the BBA requirement to his bill to get it to pass last week is what brought about the bill we have today.

Boehner’s original bill had some slim chance of passing the senate, because it was rather similar to the final deal, except it had better triggers.

But with BBA, it guaranteed that the senate would simply reject it, because the Senate knew the BBA provision gave them political cover to reject it.

Then the Senate couldn’t pass anything either, so they ended up with this bargain.

At least the Senate couldn’t pass their bill, if they had it would be even worse. But this is not as good as Boehner’s original bill (the one before the BBA).

I understand that Congressman Griffith was the only NO vote on this bill, in Virginia.

Well, the problem was boehners bill last week was better than this one, but wrists still had to be twisted to pass it because it still stunk, and it’s passage open the door for the final bill. Our side needed to kill the boahner bill and either go back to CCB or come up with a more favorable alternative that would have been the basis for final negotiation. the Boehner bill was crafted with the reid and McCain el staffers specifically as a Trojan horse to force conservatives to accept that general structure while everyone knew another less favorable bill would be thrown back at the House on the final day. Now our side is doing shady back room deals just like the left. Not good.
