Washington -- California gets $79 billion a year from the federal government - nearly 40 percent of what it spends. The money goes to everything from highways to universities. So when the federal government sneezes, California catches a cold.
Washington's frantic debt-ceiling negotiations are about to let loose a $1 trillion-plus sneeze.
The cuts headed California's way are unknown as yet, because no deal has been reached in Washington to increase the debt ceiling and prevent the Treasury from running out of cash to pay its bills Tuesday.
But it is obvious from the cuts revealed so far in Democratic and Republican plans that "there are going to be a lot of them," said state Treasurer Bill Lockyer.
"If we reduce the deficit at the federal level, it's going to increase deficits at the state level," said Vin Weber, a former Republican member of Congress and GOP consultant. "That's not the objective of people, but it's going to happen, and they all know it." Spending slashed
California already has slashed spending to reduce its own deficits and will have to cut more if federal funds dry up. The state now spends $208.5 billion a year, $79 billion of it from the federal government. It receives roughly 10 percent of what the federal government spends each year.
...
The basic outlines of the various plans would cut federal spending by roughly $1 trillion over 10 years. All the plans have ruled out additional tax revenue and cuts to the big entitlement programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. They save these for a bipartisan super committee of Congress to find an additional $1.8 trillion in savings, through tax and entitlement reforms.

He'd probably be honored to film the imminent&looming disaster this state has become..
How to Cook a Golden Goo$e . with solar&green energy subsidies!
So this would put California’s “dream” of paying to “educate” Mexican Nationals in jeopardy?
What BS. The “cuts” being discussed are cuts to the PLANNED INCREASES, not really cuts at all.
California, YOU made your bed and now YOU can lay in it!
If you give up your freedom for a check then you deserve the bed you have.
I'm sick of paying for your flaky save the d@mn (place ANY word here) programs that do nothing to save anything anyway less government bureaucracy.
My advice to any remaining California business or entrepreneur:
Get out of Dodge now.
There is nothing more destructive than ravenous democrat party parasites.
Don’t forget the insane plan for a high speed train that is spending untold billions, will never be built, and would drain more billions every year if it ever was, and would take longer and cost more per trip than flying.
The numbers are smaller, but what is true for Calif. is true for other states, as well.
They ALL get money from the feds.
In the case of Calif., more is paid in taxes BY Californians, than is returned as federal expenditures.
It’s easy to wave your hands and cut discretionary spending, but when push comes to shove, do you cut the FBI? Do you cut elementary and secondary education, or food for pregnant women, or the National Institutes of Health?

YES!!!!
DiChiFi and BoXer.. a matched set of underachievers for improving their constituents lot in life. why anyone thinks they care about the state is beyond me..
altho, I hear, a recent study predicts out that poverty prone folks here on welfare have more dvds, cell phones and flat screen TVs than any other welfare or nanny state around...
It has?! There is so much duplication and waste that California has not begun to address. Many special districts still have millions of reserves representing over 10 years of operational costs. Most are a duplication and any competent private sector manager would look at those duplicate efforts and consolidate them.
There is simply not a competent or serious effort to trim California spending. Geez, some agencies are running TV ads touting their services.
California’s socialist electoral votes ensures they always get their money.
So this would put Californias dream of paying to educate Mexican Nationals in jeopardy?

Requiem For a Dream
Sí!
“Debt deal could devastate California budget”
Doubt it, but if true, it’s a silver lining in the dark cloud.
[Disclaimer, I live in CA and our house recently became an employment-free zone.]
We would then be paying nothing more than union salaries and there would be no money for anything else.
If this happens, make certain you are not in one of the large urban areas...hell, you can't even call them cities anymore.
Megalopolis is probably a better word.
If you are south of the grapevine or west of I680 in the Bay Area, make it your PRIMARY goal to get out when TSHTF.
NO.
The liberal policies over decades has killed CA.
It’s gone. Might as well just give it to Met-E-CO
Don’t worry, thanks to the crooked redistricting plan, the Democrats will now have 2/3 majority in the California legislature - something they’ve never been able to achieve politically - which means they’ll have the requisite majority to raise taxes at will.
The cuts headed California's way are unknown as yet...No problem, the California Demwits in the mansion and the state house will just roll up their sleeves and balance the state budget.
