Polygamy sect leader Warren Jeffs is now trying to get 10 more women to see things his way.
They’re members of the Texas jury — along with two men — watching over his ongoing sexual assault trial.
The case against the 55-year-old head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) — and tied to the polygamist community in Bountiful, B.C. — centres around charges he sexually assaulted two underage girls.
One was 17 and the other 12. He reportedly went on to marry both of them.
Texas Attorney General spokesman Jerry Strickland told QMI Agency the current case is not about Jeffs being a bigamist.
It’s about the sexual assault of children, Strickland said.
Jeffs faces a potential life sentence if found guilty.
What’s unclear is whether he will also face a bigamy trial, with the attorney general’s office not willing to speculate beyond saying it’s a possibility.

I read that there was a “special” graveyard of sorts in the compound that they used to bury the deformed newborns due to inbreeding. I hope he gets the maximum sentence.

Obviously, no jury consultant there.
Well, either the defense realized they didn’t have a case, they think he has supernatural sway over women or they really screwed up voir dire.
10 women on a jury of a middle age man accused of sexually assaulting two underage girls doesn’t bode well for defense.
Bountiful was one of the fLDS re-education camps.
It has undergone a split since Jeff’s arrest and the new prophet of about half the community allows for monogamy. However, Bountiful has been very vocal in trying to get Polygamy allowed and the Muslims are very interested in letting the fLDS do the dirty work.

I know some people who escaped this particular sect and they have said the rumor isn’t true.

I cannot remember the name of the disease but it is passed from generation to generation due to inbreeding.
That part is true. I remember reading about a huge study about DNA and health problems done several years ago. They paid the fLDS good money for DNA samples and medical tests and the fLDS went a long with it not aware that part of the study had to do with inbreeding.
Apparently Hilldale/Co City is a geneticists dream.
One thing that is interesting, in the last 20 years, there has been an increase in ‘coverts’ (both men and women) from mainstream Mormonism and non-Mormon faiths which has been encouraged because of the ‘fresh blood’.
I did indeed have some issues with the way the raid was carried out- the problem is those pesky problems with the Constitution can be used against any and all of us. We should all be concerned with LEO doing things the right way even if they are after folks that need to be taken down.
This cult needs to be broken apart somehow; Warren Jeffs is definately a pervert that needs to be in jail but he is not the only one. I have seen raids on polygamist Mormon sects since I was a small child and there was a huge raid on Short Creek, Arizona beginning in the 1950s and into the 1960s that was supposed to solve the problem. There have been many raids on the polygamists over the years and yet the group size is growing rapidly. I have no idea why any woman would want to or allow herself and her children to be treated like that, but until someone can reach the women it will never end. There are endless numbers of men like Warren Jeffs to lead the group- until the women stop going for it there is no solution. The raids and prosecutions make people feel good but don’t work to stop it.
It is a very sad thing for the children, I don’t know what the solution is- gut feeling is take all the children away- but after the big round-up in Texas that did just that, that was not a solution- the women won’t talk, the children won’t either so they had to be returned. Brainwashed I guess. As much as we can be happy that Warren Jeffs and others are on trial or convicted already- the children are still in the middle and there has been no solution for them.
A sad thing I still remember is after one of the Short Creek raids one of the women came to live with one of our neighbors who was a relative. My mother told me to be very nice to the little girl because she had lost her home- mother did not tell me what was going on because I was only about 6 or 7. I felt sorry for the girl and gave her one of my dolls- she didn’t even know what to do with it. She was like a little adult, she helped her mother do all the cooking, cleaning, etc. and I never once saw her play. I will never forget that. No doubt that little girl is one of the favored older wives today.
I don’t know what the answer is to this problem, but so far raids have not been the answer. A few years ago after a raid many of the women were settled into Phoenix and Social Services tried to break the bond and were sending some of the women to college and preparing them for careers. I heard the other day that only a handful did not return to the group. I do want to see an end to this cult, but we have to remember if we stand by and let the Constitution be trampled against them or anyone else we lose a bit more of our freedom and protection in the process. I have no idea if the Constitution was violated or not with the raid in Texas, but did comment on media reports of things that were supposedly done that I did not agree with.
Probably no one would like my solution: Jail every last adult who breaks the laws of the area, including federal. 12 year olds cannot by law be married, spiritual or otherwise. Put the mothers AND the so-called fathers in jail, and much as I dislike the child welfare system, put the kids in the system. Besides child abuse, there’s welfare fraud and other crimes. Jail them. (And I’m a multi-cultural sort of gal—this should apply to any religion that does this, not just the fLDS.)
Just out of curiosity, I’d love to know what Mr. Reaganaut thinks about the unconstitutional argument in Tammy8’s post. (I really enjoyed his comments on the CA threds.)

The problem that precipitated the removal of the children, as I understand it, was the actions of the parents. It was discovered that they were moving children from room to room during the on site investigation, to keep them away from the investigators.
There was also the issue that they could not determine who some of the parents were because the children couldn’t tell them who their own mother was. They didn’t know.
There is no way social services allows for leaving children in the custody of non-custodial adults especially when there is such strong suspicion of abuse going on. It violates THEIR policy and if the investigators left the children and some later died or were abused, then they’d be the responsible ones and pay with either jail time or their jobs. They were stuck between a rock and a hard place. They do not set policy but are obligated to follow it.
I know of situations where CPS has removed children from potentially abusive situations because of reports of things teh children have said that indicated abuse. there is then an investigation. They don’t leave the child to be abused, or killed to shut them up, while they investigate.
They investigate and based on their findings, they then usually return the child. The system sucks in many respects as the potential for false accusations and ruining someone’s live is great, OTOH, when there is substantial evidence that the crimes have been committed, they would be complicit by leaving the children in the situation to be further abused.
