President Obama welcomed four freely-elected African leaders to the White House Friday, saying democracy was vital to a stable and prosperous Africa.
Africa does not need strongmen; African needs strong institutions, said the president, who met the leaders of Niger, Benin, Guinea and Cote DIvoire for talks on issues including trade, development, famine and ongoing partnerships with the U.S. , according to pool reports.
The leaders -- Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, Boni Yayi of Benin, Alpha Condé of Guinea and Alassane Ouattara of Cote DIvoire were hailed by Obama as effective models for the continent.
The leaders were chosen to visit the White House for winning democratically held elections, an administration official said. Corruption is rife in many African countries political and electoral systems.
The president said discussions were very productive adding: I emphasized that the U.S. has been and will continue to be a stalwart partner. The president was engaged during the talks on human rights abuses, a readout said.
Obama encouraged both U.S.-African trade but also inter-African trade, saying the nations can partner together, and with the U.S., to divert the looming humanitarian crisis in East Africa.
The elections in Cote dIvoire, Niger, and Guinea over the last eight months have replaced authoritarian regimes with new democratically elected governments, the official said, adding that the reelection of Benins president stands as a model of a well-rooted democratic tradition.
The meeting is an opportunity to underscore the importance of moving from holding free elections to developing strong democratic institutions and checks and balances, promoting economic growth and development and leaving a positive legacy for their successors, they added.
Quatarra may very well have been involved in the massacre of his political opponents after the election........."Ivory Coast's president said he knows nothing about brutal killings committed by his forces the day after his inauguration and defended a senior officer accused of separate atrocities as one of the country's best soldiers....... a report by Amnesty International released Wednesday accuses Ouattara's Republican Forces of continuing to carry out violence and intimidation against ethnic groups perceived as having supported his predecessor, Laurent Gbagbo. A different report by Human Rights Watch released in June alleges that forces loyal to Ouattara killed up to 149 people believed to be Gbagbo supporters.
The rights group cited a witness who said that a commander loyal to Ouattara, Cherif Ousmane, ordered the execution of 29 detainees. Two others said they saw Ousmane in a car that "disposed of the tortured and executed body of an infamous militia leader."
"This cannot be true," Ouattara said Friday. "Cherif Ousmane is one of the best soldiers."
In fact, he added, soldiers who serve under Ousmane are known for being well-trained, polite and helpful.
"In any case, if we discover that anyone has committed atrocities, that person will................
As for another 'democratically' elected African leader who visited the White House a couple weeks ago, Gabon's Ali Bongo, his election was a sham and basically he was installed after the death of his father. His family has been systematically looting the oil wealth of Gabon for DECADES...What have they been doing with the money??............. Gabon leader Ali Bongo Ondimba slammed for Paris mansion purchase ......The leader of an African state has been criticised for squandering £85million on a lavish Paris townhouse.
How about the new leader of Guinea who stopped by??...... Guinea's Conde fails to push anti-corruption drive.......Despite its mineral wealth as the world's leading exporter in bauxite, Guinea is among the five most corrupt nations in Africa and among the top ten in the world, according to a 2006 ranking by Transparency International.
Hmmmm, how about the 'democratically' elected leader of Benin?? ................On 3 August 2010, the Benin authorities, threatened both local and foreign media with consequences should they fail to abide by ethics of the profession, especially in the recent corruption allegations levelled against President Boni Yayi.
More than half of the country's members of parliament have linked President Yayi to corruption. They claimed he offered illegal assistance to Investment Consultancy and Computering Services (ICC), an insurance company, which was reported to have funded his campaign.
Nice to see who Barry holds up as beacons of freedom, democracy, and human rights. War criminals and thugs who have stolen elections and are stealing their countries wealth while their countrymen live in poverty.
The leader of Guinea sounds a lot like our Barry.......
Six months after Guinea’s President Alpha Conde was democratically elected promising reforms, he has kept officials of the former regime close to him, which critics say is undermining efforts to root out corruption.
“His entourage is disorienting the Guineans,” said Aziz Diop, Secretary General of Guinea’s National Council of Civil Society Organizations (CNOSC).
“The president did not prepare himself to lead. He does not have competent officials to help him identify the good ones from the bad ones.
“So he makes the best of it with those belonging to (previous president Lansana) Conte’s regime — specialists in kleptomania,” he added.
Last night I tuned into CSPAN just in time to see Sen Imhoff speaking in front of a talking point placard entitled "Obama's Failed Policies"
I ran in to the other room to show the wife, and as he was talking about the current debates on national debt he asked, (paraphrasing):
"Where's the President? He's meeting with terrorists in the White House"
hummmm! and how much money we don’t have did Obama/Clinton give away this time??

All I want to know: did they had the Reverend Wright’s seal of approval?
How many homes have they bought in Paris? With our money?
Oh Well: They made Mandella a hero.
How many are starving where that hero was President?
All I want to know: did they had the Reverend Wright’s seal of approval?
