Political pollster Nate Silver summarized the results of a recent Gallup poll this way on Thursday. "In case there weren't enough reasons to be depressed about the country: Popularity of beer at record low."
OK, it's not crystal clear that a record has been shattered, but the nation's adoration of beer has dropped to its lowest point in the past 20 years among adults, according to the poll that was released Wednesday.
Among those asked which alcoholic beverage they would most often drink, 36% said beer was their pick. Beer just beat out wine as the top choice. Wine was the preference of 35% of respondents. Only 23% said liquor was their top choice.
According to the poll, the choice of beer as a top pick declined among all age groups but fell most among young adults - dropping to 39% from 51% a year earlier.
By contrast, the preference for beer among adults between ages 35 and 54 fell only 3 percentage points, to 41% from 44%. Among older adults, the preference dropped only two points, to 27% from 29%. In the youngest group, those 18 to 34, the drop in the preference for beer happened alongside a slight increase in their preferences for liquor and wine.
Worth noting: Midwesterners lead the country in beer preference, with 46% of those in the region making beer their first choice. The eastern U.S. comes in second with 37% of those polled preferring beer.
Hey...I’m trying to do my part!
More beer for me then.
Obama’s fault!
Beer... It’s what’s for breakfast...
Can you even get *real* beer anymore??
All of the commercials I see these days are for “Light” or “Ice” or “Flavored” or some other metrosexual concoction that they, apparently, call ‘beer’....
Doesn’t seem to make sense since the varieties of beer being sold in supermarkets, liquor stores and specialty stores has never been better.
I’m afraid that I’m part of the loss... Due to medical problems, I can no longer drink carbonated beverages :-(.
I LOVE beer and beer like beverages. My favorites being porters and ales.

YUM!
LOL! 3 seconds. :-)
Great minds think alike!!
It would be interesting to know what effect the sale of Budwiser to a foreign country had on that data. The pride of buying a Bud just isn’t the same.
Now that I have read 3 sentences I can see that this story is anti wine and that is pure racism. I think you should ask the Mods to take the thread down!!! now
Yeah...Obama drinks beer in public, and the next thing you know, folks don’t want beer. Can you REALLY blame them?
“Can you even get *real* beer anymore??”
Get yourself some Flying Dog Double Pale Ale and then ping me.
About the time I quit drinking.
