In March 2010, Nancy Pelosi warned us that we had to pass ObamaCare to find out whats in it. What is in it is jobs for China. Whats not in it is jobs for Americans, as the Boston Globe reports today (via NewsAlert):
Boston Scientific Corp. said yesterday that it plans to eliminate 1,200 to 1,400 jobs worldwide during the next 2 1/2 years to free money for new investments, the Natick medical device makers second major round of cuts since last year.
The company would not say how many jobs will be lost in Massachusetts, where fewer than 2,000 of its 25,000 employees are based. In February 2010, Boston Scientific said it would pare 1,300 jobs worldwide, but similarly did not say where.
Yesterdays move, a day after Boston Scientific disclosed it was investing $150 million and hiring 1,000 people in China, raised fears that the company will gradually shift more work to foreign sites with less government oversight and lower costs than the United States.
Massachusetts state Senator James Elridge (D-Acton) reacted predictably:
My sense is, sadly, that like many other American companies, they are shedding jobs in Massachusetts and adding jobs overseas, Eldridge said. And this is a company making greater profits, so its even more outrageous.
Yes, thats what happens when the American government makes it more expensive to do business in the US.

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
I used to work for them and a company they bought for 17 Years! BS laid-off wonderful talent when they bought us.
I am very familiar with this industry.
It is expected that new medical devices currently in the pipeline will come out between now and 2015.
After that, Obamacare will reduce the development of new devices to near zero as cost controls will prohibit new technologies over existing technologies.
Therefore, device manufacturers are looking to increase margins on existing equipment as much as possible.....that means producing these using the lowest labor rates.
This is what happens under managed care.....development stops, existing diseases remain untreatable and no cures are developed.
But, because those products are never available, nobody misses them.
I’ve been an Development Engineer in this industry for the past 20 Years.
Never available.....never missed. You said it.
In the last few days I seen (TV)and heard (radio) too many commercials to count about contacting (LAWYERS) for every medical device in existance and too many drugs to count.
The commercials sound as though the device makers and drug manufacturers as WILLFULLY injuring people.
The answer..accept NO medical device and take NO drugs. You have the right to peacefully die.
As the Patent Protections for Propriety Drugs expire, the search for NEW treatments and cures will diminish rapidly.
As it become “not worth the effort” to devise and patent that new “joint replacement” the effort won’t be made.
I think that is supposed to be progress.
More of that Kenyan “fundamental transformation”.
I’ll say it because no one yet has.
Elections have consequences. This is what people voted for.
Maybe they didn’t understand the specifics but all they needed to do was pay attention to the Joe the Plumber incident. They didn’t. So because they were too lazy to ask questions (”What does redistribute wealth mean???”) or hated George Bush SO much or wanted to feel supergood about being part of the ultimate act of affirmative action—this is what we get. What’s being redistributed is suffering. Now we all suffer because 53% of the country went to the polls and left their brains at home.
Some jobs will be gone for good. Forever. Not coming back. It’s too late to change that. No matter who is president in 2013, those industries are not returning to America because they will be settled and functioning elsewhere.
Oh well. Learn to do with less. Michelle Obama is. Oh wait, she’s not.

I need glasses. I read the title as “Medieval-device manufacturer” and thought “Why do we need one of those anyway?”
Who do you work for and in what areas? You can PM me.
Yes it's outrageous that they make a profit! HOW DARE THEY!!!!...............
I vote we pull one of those up to the Senate and start knocking some sense into Democrats.
Merck's 2nd-Quarter Profit Rises; announces more layoffs (13,000)
Pilgrim's Pride closing chicken plant in Dallas (1,000 jobs)
Not only that, but I have seen places where the factories were razed to bare land to lower the property taxes. Try building a new plant with all the existing regulations.
We're at the end of an era and America will never again be the manufacturing and economic giant it once was. Even if the Republicans win in the next election, nothing much will change. There will be a temporary upward spike as businesses breathe a sigh of relief but the stagnation will continue. The country became great because we MADE things. Now we are relegated to taking in each others' laundry. Welcome to the Service Economy.
There is according to the news a new report out on FDA failures....especially for implanted medical devices.
