Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) on Friday ramped up growing Democratic pressure on the White House to consider invoking the Fourteenth Amendment to raise the debt ceiling.
"Is there anything that prohibits him from doing that? The answer is no," Harkin said. The White House has been going about the idea the wrong way by asking whether the amendment legally gives the president the power to raise the debt ceiling without Congressional authority, according to Harkin.
Although President Obama indicated last week that his lawyers had looked into the legality of the so-called Fourteenth Amendment solution, he said they were not persuaded that that is a winning argument.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney also made it clear in a briefing on Tuesday that the option was not on the table. The Constitution makes clear that Congress has the authority -- not the president -- to borrow money, Carney said. And only Congress can increase the statutory debt ceiling. Thats just a reality.
But Harkin called it nuts for the White House to indicate they would not consider the option. It should be on the table," he said on the liberal Bill Presss radio show.

You might want to double check that, last time I looked Obama was commander in chief.
I’m with you. He inherits the entire problem if he pulls the trigger here. GOP would be off the hook. The one stat that has remained steady is the American public has been steadfast in NOT wanting the debt limit raised. I think that’s why he hasn’t used this option.
LOL. Sen. Harkin, you couldn't be more wrong. WE THE PEOPLE are still in charge and you are in our way.
LET'S ROLL!!!!
Which part did Obama screw up in inauguration day?
We should have known it would be downhill from there.
The Federal Reserve. EQ3.

One more extra constitutional illegal move by this president may push the SC to "weigh in" - making Obama look like an even bigger tinpot wannabe community organizing race hustler in chief.
Curious why little Tommy Harkin of all people would say this.
Whassat ole Senator Ethanol Dungheap done be sayin’?
And all the officers and troops take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic.
The 14th amendment prevents him from using the 14th amendment in the way he wants to.
What a J@ckass. The 14th is what will be used for impeachment if the democrats don’t make the debt interest payments. That’s what the debt reference is there for. It says the debt cannot be ignored, not the spending.
Of course Harkin’s, the rest of the democrats and several black robed oligarchs in the Judicial Branch know their supporters are ignoramuses.
Hooray for an uniformed voter base; they made a lot of politicians, bureaucrats and contractors wealthy beyond their dreams.
This would solve so many of Republicans problems, it would unite them again and pass all the deficit blame to Obama. Dream on Republicans. (This also shows how stupid these House progressives are wrt to politics.)
Obama has a MUCH better plan: Get Republicans blamed for both the bad economy AND for the increase in the debt limit by forcing them to do it with little or no budget cuts.
Sorry, Harkin - but constitutional scholars say you’re WRONG.
I’d love to see BHO try it, though. What fun we’d have with him :-))))))))))))
On another note, gold is above $1620!
I don’t need to be pinged to your every utterance here.... thank you very much.
The people have been fools and 0bama has been so in your face that I love the thought of him owning this. We are hopeless. 0bama can take down the United States, but he’s not going to live forever. And he will go down in history for what he has always been and what our founders warned us of.
“Divisions”?
You have the House and the Senate that make up Congress.
