Advisers and elected allies of Texas Gov. Rick Perry tell Whispers that the Republican will join the crowded field of presidential hopefuls by the end of August...

Perry's entry will be a "game changer," said Mark Meckler, cofounder of the Tea Party Patriots, the nation's largest umbrella group for the movement. "It changes the equation because he has a record to run on." That record, added Meckler, is the "Texas miracle" of growth and economic prosperity....

Polls show substantial support for Perry. Gallup today has him winning in the South and within striking distance of leading the pack in the Midwest and East. [Read more about the 2012 presidential election.]

One very close adviser said that Perry keeps in contact with key governors from around the nation, like Barbour, Daniels, and even Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who runs the other state with a good employment and economic record. There's even talk that if he wins the nomination, he'd pick one of those three as a runningmate.

Gore packaged himself as a "Southern Conservative" (or "Moderate") in 1988, but his voting record betrayed that claim even by then. His votes were above 90% liberal across the board by then (that year he ran for President, he scored a 9% from the ACU). His seatmate, Jim "Daff-uh-Zit" Sasser, similarly hoodwinked Tennesseans into believing he was also a "Southern Conservative" as his voting record was almost identical to Gore's (and he was elected to his third and final term by a massive landslide proportion that same year - 1988). Within 6 years, my fellow Tennesseans finally woke up to what some of us already knew by then.

No, it’s a valid point. Both are opportunists. Perry has most certainly NOT been a consistent and reliable Conservative. If you knew his record, you’d know that.

While Texas governor Rick Perry is a relatively new name in discussions of the GOP race, he is drawing strong interest from highly attentive Republicans. Among Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters who say they have given a lot of thought to the candidates, 22% support Perry, 15% Romney, 13% Bachmann and 12% Cain.

And Perry’s lead is substantial among highly attentive Tea Party supporters. Perry has the backing of 29% of Republicans and Republican-leaners who agree with the Tea Party. That is nearly double the backing for the next closest candidate, Herman Cain (16%).

What was the alternative ? Endorsing the 9/11 Truther Paulbot Deb Medina ? If Perry had had a legit and bonafide Conservative alternative opponent (like Michael Williams), she’d have endorsed him.

We need a real leader at this time, not another damnable political opportunist. Palin is a leader, Perry isn’t.

You know how it goes. Southern Dems had to pick somebody for president that won't tick off the locals. So they pick another southern "conservative" Dem. (Or vote for Heath Shuler or Speaker, ha ha ha!) Gore was a twofer 'cause of his old man. Liberal Republicans do the same thing picking Giuliani or Huntsman or whoever.

Perry's good at reading the political winds, which of course is a mixed blessing. It does put him ahead of the large faction of Republicanism which is not conservative AND not populist - the whipping boys, the Lindsey Grahams.

Yes, that would be wonderful, but...

Palin is a leader, Perry isn’t.

She may or may not endorse Perry, but I doubt she'll run. We'll see.

The numbers are already clearly there for Perry. They had to finalize the last hurdle of financing before they could start getting serious. It is clear that they have done that. The inside info is that the large bundled donors have committed to Perry and that he will have sufficient support.

Once Perry announces, the flood of donors and support that has been holding out for so long will break like a cheap suitcase. Perry will surge to the top and take charge of the field.

If Palin enters, it will split the vote among the base and we will wind up with another 2008. If Palin is as smart as her drones claim she is, she will do as you predicted. If not, we are in real trouble.

Well, then let us hope Perry stays out and doesn’t divide the base.

Wrong, we need somebody with more than 10 years actual executive experience to straighten out this mess. Brief City Council and Mayoral experience that accounts for 90% of your candidate’s “experience” just won’t cut it this time.

Some of us Texans warned people here about Bush too but few listened. Most preferred to listen to Rove, the MSM and some FReepers we called the coven.

It’s happening again, except most of the coven is gone.

You may be satisfied with a rank opportunist with a record that is anything but "Solid Conservative" but the rest of us aren't. This guy has been, at best, a very subpar Governor, from his support of liberals for President (Gore, Giuliani), the support of sanctuary policies for illegals, the Trans-Texas Corridor fiasco, Gardasil for teens and on and on. Sorry, dude. The only thing that Perry needs to do is exit politics and allow a REAL Conservative to take his place in Austin like Michael Williams. It's amazing how many so-called FReepers are willing to swallow the RINO Kool-Aid by the gallons when offered. That, sir, is how we end up like the crap we had in 2008. Something you Perry drones don't get.

Unfortunately, the alternative in 2000 was the execrable McCain and Dubya looked like a savior compared to that buffoon. It’s why we need Palin this time to stop the madness.

Either Sarah or Michelle would be great. Perry is not a good choice.

What I really don’t understand is how Giuliani shows up in any pole. He would be as bad as Obama.

You forget, I was around here in 2008. The infighting and severely split base between Thompson, Huckabee and even Romney, is exactly how McNuts slipped in through the back door. The base was busy tearing each other apart while the moderates and apolitical indies nominated the worst-case scenario. The same thing will happen again.

A 3-way race like this seems to always turn out the same. (Perry, Bachmann, Palin) T-Paw/Huntsman will hurt Romney for a while, but Romney will out spend them and probably win with the base preoccupied again.

Aside from Thompson, ALL other so-called first tier candidates were degrees of horrible. That McCain was BETTER than Slick Willard and Huckster just shows how appalling it truly was. Perry may be better than those latter three, but that's only because we're grading on a curve. Listen to the Texans and those that have been following Perry, he isn't the one we want. This guy has had the opportunity to be a great Conservative leader in Texas with those hyper-majorities, and he's done next to nothing.

Absent Palin, you want swift success in a leader who doesn't give a crap what the leftist/elitist opposition thinks ? Try Maine's Paul LePage. That man is a leader and a miracle worker, and he's only held office as Governor for six months. He'd make a fantastic President.
