The officers on my squad here in IL would respond exactly the same way.

I hope so. That would be a nice change from most of the stories we have been hearing.
Kudos to you and your squad...

So how would an officer be able to pick out a "norway shooter" type versus an American who knows his rights?
I'm just asking. I'm all for open carry rights and believe it will make our streets safer. I also know that the a "norway shooter" type would have gladly given his name.
Again, I'm just asking.

It’s called knowing the law and acting decently towards your fellow citizens. The Oceanside officer obviously left his ego at home and didn’t get angry when “Jeremy” wouldn’t give his name.

I fail to understand the benefit of carrying a weapon without ammunition. That would be like carrying an empty condom wrapper. IMHO the citizen in this case is nothing more than a chauvinist A-Hole!

“
In my humble estimation, the video of Officer Matthew Lyons of the Oceanside (Calif.) PD could be a training video for any agency that has to deal with open carry citizens. In fact, the video of video below in which Officer Lyons encounters one of those individuals stands in stark contrast to another we posted to PoliceOne last week.”

Agreed!
I have blogged the Marine/Officer Lyons video to my own blog, and hope others have too!

even though officer lyons remarked that it was ok to record the stop because we are not a third world country, his stopping of a citizen was still the action of a third world despot.
“jeremy” was intimidated by an armed response to a constitutional right and had to inform officer lyons who twice attempted to get identification that was unnecessary since jeremy was not in violation of any constitutional law.
though he is being hailed as the next best american hero, officer lyon, badge 1093, is still a toadie of oppressive government.

There should be more cops like Officer Lyons. I hope the video goes viral.

there has been an increasing movement among a segment of legally-armed citizens to carry unloaded sidearms in plain view. This makes no sense whatsoever.

Good grief. I suppose considering that it’s California, it could have gone a lot worse. And I have no doubt that a lot of Illinois cops would act the same way. Thank God I’ve long since moved to a free state where we don’t tolerate that sort of BS. If agencies in most states tried to use that pointless detention (which I believe is based on one very specific California law that’s being challenged in the courts) as training material for any purpose other than “here’s what NOT to do to citizens going about their business”, it’d lead to a lot of unnecessary lawsuits.

so the officer disarmed the citizen,
took the citizen’s name when there was no crime.
it still seems too much.

A$$hole cop is charming and smooth, but still seeks to deny civil rights under color of law.
His job is to keep the peace, and not to question people who possess legal objects.

I guess I don’t get it. Open carry is legal in NH.
What is the point of open carry of an unloaded gun? Just to piss people off?
What if your unloaded gun causes a loaded gun to be drawn? How f***ing stupid is that?

My experience with open carry is bipolar. The older cops especially the Deputy Sheriff's could care less or even strike up a conversation about how do I like the weapon I am carrying or do I have an problems with it. It is mostly you punk city cops that get their panties in a wad. BTW if you are an open carry person a regular donation to the Police Widows and Orphans Fund (or what ever it is called) along with your face being associated with it goes along way when you have to summon a supervisor to the scene.

Of course Officer Matt Lyons is a Marine. Marines are self-disciplined.
Marines, after taking the oath to defend the Constitution of the United States, to go to thru the process to become a Marine, then to serve 22 years has Officer Lyons did, have a tendency to take that oath seriously.
