Great police response to 'open carry' activist

In California, where I live and work, there has been an increasing movement among a segment of legally-armed citizens to carry unloaded sidearms in plain view. This trend is happening elsewhere, but there seems to just be more “activity” around the movement here in the Golden State perhaps because it seems so much more difficult to get a CCW here than in most other states.

In my humble estimation, the video of Officer Matthew Lyons of the Oceanside (Calif.) PD could be a training video for any agency that has to deal with “open carry citizens.” In fact, the video of video below in which Officer Lyons encounters one of those individuals stands in stark contrast to another we posted to PoliceOne last week.

There has been quite a lot of traffic to the video of Canton (Ohio) Patrolman Harless not just here on PoliceOne, but all over the Internet — and his less-than-stellar response to a legally-armed citizen in his sector. I’m told that Harless has been — or soon will be — relieved of his badge. Well, regardless of the outcome of that particular case, there are myriad examples out there of officers encountering an open-carry citizen, and I point to this one with Officer Lyons as a compelling example of “doing it the right way.”

Officer Lyons has been hailed by a handful of bloggers, including one for CBS News which bears repeating here:

“Officer Matt Lyons with the Oceanside Police Department definitely deserves a shout out for this almost 3-minute encounter. Officer Lyons, we salute you, not only for your incredible professionalism, sense of humor, and great on camera demeanor, but also your dedicated 22 years of service in the United States Marine Corps.”

do not let fear make you a toadie.

One doesn't have to wonder who the pea brain is around here when you're the one calling everyone a "toadie". .....if that's the way you conduct a conversation then you're best ignored............

Geez, I hope we can keep using that "toadie" moniker. I really like it.

I look at it in the light of “First they came for...” we must take our country back to it’s constitutional roots.

i don’t fit your mold... no laws are broken carrying outside my house... i don’t see people as people of different races, but all one human race... with toadies seemingly prevailing.

you see i am consistent with my beliefs that my fears do not mean someone else is breaking the law until they actually break the law.

ignore me, but ignoring the truth is detrimental to your being saved from ignorance.

hahahahaha...

i am laughing at you though it is so sad.

My experience with open carry is bipolar. The older cops especially the Deputy Sheriff's could care less or even strike up a conversation about how do I like the weapon I am carrying or do I have an problems with it. It is mostly you punk city cops that get their panties in a wad. BTW if you are an open carry person a regular donation to the Police Widows and Orphans Fund (or what ever it is called) along with your face being associated with it goes along way when you have to summon a supervisor to the scene.

Is he obligated to follow up on several calls complaining about two men, holding hands and kissing by a schoolyard?

i’ve certainly enjoyed this thread, except for the fact that some people will go through life profiling and oppressing people just because they are afraid to stand up for themselves.

i saw a man carrying not too concealed at a little league park... watched him. saw he was not a threat. talked with him. didn’t have to grill him for his name, address or whatever... i was at a hotel where one of the maintenance men adjusted his gun in his waistband... it was a jersey hotel... he was working in the back taking out trash. i didn’t need to see his “permit”, it’s in the constitution.

people aren’t guilty of crimes they might commit...

thanks for your partnership in this thread.

**What do you think the answer should be? That a citizen apparently lawfully exercising an enumerated right shouldn't get bothered by the police unless there is something else he has done to warrant questioning and a minor shake down. And I might agree with you that approaching an officer in the middle of a traffic stop might be such a case. But this case here? No. "You causing any trouble." "No." "OK, looks that way to me, too. Fred, who the hell called in this false 'disturbance' call? We need to give them a talking-to. They clearly don't understand the Bill of Rights."

Let’s try that again without losing the formatting.

I really have a hard time getting my head around the jumpiness of LEO's when dealing with citizens with firearms. It seems to be worse in some of the northern states. Living here in Florida all my life where it's pretty much assumed that most people are armed, and most certainly carrying in their vehicles, it just seems weird to me. But, I'm a law abiding citizen that's never been arrested, and only been pulled over three times in more that 30 years of driving. I carry concealed everywhere, even when driving, and I would never inform a LEO that I was, not under any circumstances. It's none of their business. And the way police are being militarized, and the lack of respect many seem to show to anyone not law enforcement, they just make me nervous and I would feel safer not being around them at all, if I can help it.

That is a real shame too, but I would still stop and risk my life exchanging fire with some perp that had gotten an officers gun away from him. Yes, I would try to save the toadies a$$.

the first question out of the officer’s mouth was are you a police officer, if so all would be ok...

it became questionable when it was just a regular citizen without super powers...

thanks for your participation in the fight for rights too.

thank you.

even in baltimore, when the msp trooper across the street was threatened by gang violence... i would defend him and his family if anything were to go down... though i wouldn’t be doing it “legally” according to maryland law.

thanks for seeing the truth behind the constitution.

Thank you for your wisdom and recognition of reality! The thread demonstrates that so many ‘conservatives’ don’t really get it, and would support government usurpation of our Constitutional protected rights.

All that the officer said is that we got alot of calls about you walking down the street.

Same for Negros riding in the front of the bus.

The only difference being that there was a LAW against that to be Enforced. And there is no law against what Jeremy was doing.

That Rosa Parks was an uppity bitch, wasn’t she? No concern whatsoever for “officer safety.”

If a man was walking often in my neighborhood with open carry I would want to know his name and what he was doing. Don’t think that is unreasonable. I would not appreciate it if he would only gave me his first name.

if he is not breaking the law, if open carry is legal, and he is not threatening you, in America, why does he have to give you his name. your wants, or fears, do not trump another’s rights...

it is not unreasonable, but not furnishing you with the information is not illegal.
