Why I Oppose the Boehner-Reid Debt Plan
SCF ^ | 7-26-11 | U.S. Senator Jim DeMint

Posted on 07/26/2011 7:42:33 PM PDT by WOBBLY BOB

■Provides two increases in the debt limit -- $900 billion and $1.6 trillion — totaling $2.5 trillion. It gives the President an immediate $900 billion increase given that Congress does not vote to disapprove it. It gives the President another $1.6 trillion increase next year if a bill written by a new Super Committee passes both houses and becomes law.

■Reduces spending by only $1.2 trillion over the next ten years. This amount won't even come close to balancing the budget, as the debt is expected to grow by as much as $10 trillion over the next decade. The plan also reduces spending by only $6 billion in 2012. Considering that our government currently spends $10 billion a day, $6 billion is far too little to cut over the first year of the plan.

■Calls for a vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment but does not require its passage. Without passage of a strong Balanced Budget Amendment, Congress will never break its addiction to spending.

The only cuts I want to see are the here and now. Everything else is more DC Trickery.

Yes.

Here's all you have to know. Obama's "Porculus" program has been added into the "baseline" budget. That means that every year has a trillion dollar plus increase over the 2008 budget.

So, in 10 years, we have an additional $10 trillion plus in new spending with at least 43 cents of every dollar being "borrowed" (ie created out of thin air).

The "Boehner Plan" cuts a trillion plus in spending over the next 10 years. In other words, the "Boehner Plan" sanctions the Obama increase in the size and scope of the Federal Government.

It's NOT a first step in the right direction. It's another sprint in the wrong direction. It will do exactly nothing to improve the situation.

“The “Boehner Plan” cuts a trillion plus in spending over the next 10 years”

And that’s IF cuts are made. This deal does not bind future congresscritters. And more importantly, there is NO HISTORY of the DC Hacks following up on promised future spending cuts. None , zip, nada.

“Quit borrowing and spending money our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will have to pay back. It’s not complicated.”

You won’t hear me argue that, but the problem is getting the old-timers to understand that Social Security MUST be turned into a means-tested welfare program (and it will, it’s only a question of whether we have to collapse our country first).

But mention it on this site...the most conservative in the business and you get half the oldies SCREAMING at me, DEMANDING back the money they put in. They could care less if their collective voting wound up getting that money spent real-time and now they have to come after our kids and grandkids.

So you have half of the oldies HERE saying that. You can imagine what the rest of the oldies think (as in 95% of them). And by oldie, even someone who’s worked 20 years feels the same. So what the hell is a politician supposed to do?

That’s why I have 4 years worth of every non-perishable item that I can think of.

What is it going to take to force these a-holes to do the job they were elected to do?

Winning the Senate.

I just wish they'd be honest - don't tell us it's a good deal only to find out it sucks badly.

If they'd say "we would like more immediate cuts, less of a debt raise, and another vote next spring - but those won't get by the Senate. So instead of risking what could happen to the economy at the hands of the party of NO dems, we've decided to spare the country from the terrorism of the dems, pass a bill that will prevent undue harm, and ask your help in winning the Senate."

I would be much more likely to back them. But c'mon, this deal sux so bad.

EV we all know CCB increases the debt ceiling. None of us likes it. And we would like even less losing the House next fall after gov't spending is cut overnight by nearly half.

I am for CCB because it does indeed provide a reasonable mechanism toward sanity.

Refusing to raise the debt ceiling at all right now would be suicide next fall. I prefer accepting something that will cut some - whatever the dems will take in this environment - then focus on taking the message thru the elections.

So, we are on the same side. Some of us just think the best route would be to win big again next fall. Some of us think that we're being set up to lose our advantage.

I am of the mind that we will be crushed next fall if we cut 44% of government overnight for 15 months. Cutting that much would save us almost 2 trillion in 15 months - but if we take the House, Senate, and White House think what we could do. Alternatively, what if we lose them?

So, really, you’re admitting that $2.4 TRILLION has been sacrificed on the altar of Republican re-election chances. Joy.

No, you made that up.

I’m saying it’s worth considering that you’re being set up by the man who refuses to propose anything.

I’m saying it’s worth considering that our chances are much better to get something substantive if we can get the Senate and/or the House. CCB is something substantive - that’s why the dems won’t even take it up.

0zero is laughing his ass off at you.

It is amazing all the fear mongering over not increasing the debt but very little look at the risk of letting debt just grow out of control.

Seems to me it's the Republicans he's laughing at. No matter which "plan" passes, they ALL raise the debt ceiling by several trillion. You think he cares about anything but the bottom line? I don't.

What I think he cares about is another four years of spending. And that's his focus already. If he can get our freshmen to break their no new tax pledge he will kill us. If he can goad us into holding firm to no increase, he will kill us.

EV you know what would happen economically and socially if gov't spending were cut, overnight, by 45%. We would be slaughtered next fall. Sure we'd spend 2T less - until after the next elections!

He wasn't able to get us to break the tax pledge but he is sending us gently down the plank by goading us into sticking to no raise. IMO it will kill us.

This site is all about exchanging ideas - i've provided mine - CCB. What's your plan EV?

Stop borrowing against posterity’s liberty and prosperity. Return to the limits of the Enumerated Powers.

The idea that borrowing and spending this two and a half trillion dollars doesn’t amount to a tax increase is nonsense. It’s all money that the taxpayers will have to pay back, with interest.

This ain’t rocket science. The country is going bankrupt because of big spending, big taxing, big government Marxists, socialists, liberals, progressives, moderates and RINOS!!

We don’t need a higher credit limit or higher taxes. We need to cut the damned government! Cut the spending! Cut the stifling regulations! Cut the taxes!! Cut it NOW!! Not ten years from now, not five years from now, not two years from now, CUT IT NOW!!

Get the government out of our pockets, out of our faces, out of our business, off our backs and OUT of our lives!!

Set our people free, turn them loose and let them go back to work and produce, free of government intervention, free of government thievery and free of government harassment!!

No compromise, no retreat, no surrender!!

Quit dinking around with deals and extra-constitutional committees!!

We the Taxed Enough Already people sent you Republicans up there to CUT the government, CUT the spending, and CUT the taxes!! Now, dammit, get off your butts, quit playing footsie with the corrupt bastards and do your JOB!!

Pass a budget and cut, baby, CUT and cut DEEP!!

Make the corrupt bastard democrats block or veto it, but pass the damned thing!! And then cut deeper and pass it again!! And again!! All the way up to election day if need be!! You the REPUBLICAN congress control the budget!! Now, CUT it and PASS it!!

Let the people decide if they’d rather have big spending, big taxing, petulant democrats in charge to bankrupt our country or tax cutting, government cutting, deficit cutting, fiscally responsible adult REPUBLICANS!!

End the ridiculous war on capitalism! End the war on industry! End the war against coal, oil, gas and energy! End the war against our previously free economy! End the war against our people!! And start by repealing ObamaCommieCare!!

Put our people back to WORK!!

We sent you up there for a reason. If you can’t do the job, GO HOME and let someone else do it!! Or, by God, we’ll send you packing in 2012!!

A TEA party rebellion is brewing!!

I can see 2012 from my house!!

There is no way to “get to the next election in good shape.”

The whole lot of them, almost without exception, need to be defeated.
