NAACP president targets new voting laws

NAACP president blames 'racist elements' for new laws requiring forms of identification that he says many poor people simply don't have.

In a pointed keynote address Monday, NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous urged members of the civil rights organization to stand up against restrictive state voting laws, which he compared to Jim Crow laws of decades past.

He blamed "racist elements" in the "tea party" movement for new voting requirements, which he said have disenfranchised minority voters in dozens of states as President Obama prepares to seek reelection in 2012.

"Let us recognize the obvious," Jealous said. "Our voting rights are under attack because we had a great breakthrough — the election of a black president. It was followed by a great backlash."

If you are too stupid or out-of-it to have ID then you should not be voting. What kind of adult does not have ID?

“new laws requiring forms of identification that he says many poor people simply don't have. “

Make them PROVE this. I think it's complete BULL$HIT.

I think most poor people are MORE likely to have ID so they can cash in on gubmint giveaways, In fact, they likely have many IDs in various different names.

Does one need ID to sign up for government assistance?
Can one be asked to show ID before using an EBT card?

They pull the "Jim Crow laws" card every time states crack down on illegal voting. It's been SOP since the '80s.

Just present these people, and we’ll get them a free ID.
No problem.

If these people exist, bring them forth, and we’ll alleviate their problem.

How are these disenfranchised voters getting welfare? Getting charge cards? Checking accounts? Even getting a driver’s license? Could it be that most of them are using someone else’s identification? All Americans have access to picture identifications, even for free. There is no excuse for them, other than laziness and/or cheating. Ignorance is no excuse, either.

What the NAACP head is really admitting is that voter fraud will be harder, now. Some states have offered to supply voter identification cards to its citizens free of charge - and one state (Georgia, I believe) even offered to send a government representative to the prospective citizens home to give them an I.D. card. Not good enough. So, voter fraud continues while race hustlers pretend it’s all about race. What a crock! To the left, its all about keeping voter fraud going so more Democrat statists can be ‘elected’, primarily Barack Hussein Obama in 2012.

Some leftist said a while back that voter ID would reduce “turnout” by 11%.

I had no idea that voter fraud was that high.

The Democrats were unable to identify even a single person in Indiana who couldn’t get a photo ID. That’s one of the reasons the Democrats lost the case at the US Supreme Court. States who don’t want to have to screw with the courts all the time over this matter are best off copying the Indiana statute. The New York Times, if not the guys running the NAACP knows all about this “settled law” ~ SEE: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/29/washington/28cnd-scotus.html

Agree. Also, if the NAACP is so concerned about poor people not being able to afford ID, why not start a fund to pay for ID for the poor. Or fight for provisions in voter ID laws that would allow the truly needy to have reduced fees or no fees for their photo IDs. Having ID benefits citizens much more than being able to vote without it.

That said, I seriously doubt more than a tiny percentage of the LEGAL population lacks ID for voting and most of them probably just don’t care to have ID, as opposed to being unable to afford it.

IMHO, the NAACP’s oppostion to voter ID laws comes from its desire to continue the time honored tradition of Democrat voter fraud.

This issue has been decided...Americans overwhelmingly favor photo ID for voter registrations..The senile old fools at the NAACP are just trying to gin up some publicity..the NAACP is basically meaningless..best ignored..

Of course, we’re all saying that we would gladly provide those who truly can’t get an ID with one for free,

but beware the leftist/Alinsky tactic that they used on the banks to make them cave - overwhelm the system. They’d have hundreds or thousands of neighborhood people go to a bank and open an account for $1, overwhelming the bank until they caved on lending standards.

They’d do the same thing with any system you set up for free ID for “the needy”.

I wonder if NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous ever gets just a little embarrassed at dragging out the old lie that "poor" people don't have an identity.

I would wager that the "poor" don't have much problem with an identity at the welfare office.

Why don't Mr. Jealous just fess up that its really, really hard to engage in voter fraud if the "voter" has to acutally prove that they are a bonafide voter...

...I for one would have a lot more respect for him if he would just tell us what was on his pea-brained mind.

These cretins know full well that these laws have nothing to do with racism, and everything to do with countering vote-fraud.

If they want to see racists, they can look in the mirror.

Jealous is a boob. Indiana (one of the first states to pass a voter ID law IIRC) also has an ID law for anyone buying booze...I’d bet plenty of these “poor” discriminatees in Indiana have ID, if for no other reason than to buy Wild Turkey or RWB.
