President Obama backed a proposal by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to avert a debt-limit crisis by trimming $2.7 trillion of government spending without raising new taxes.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement that Reid's proposal was a "reasonable approach that should receive the support of both parties."
Obama, meanwhile, will address the nation at 9 p.m. EDT Monday about "avoiding default and the best approach to cutting deficits."
Reid's plan, unveiled Monday, does not include any new tax revenue, as President Obama has demanded. But unlike the GOP plan, it would extend the debt ceiling into 2013an Obama ultimatum.
House Speaker John Boehner quickly dismissed the Reid plan as full of "gimmicks." Boehner said the plan failed to make any real changes in the government's spending and does not address the Medicare and Medicaid health programs for the elderly and poor or other benefit programs.
Republicans also are concerned that the cuts it contains would prove illusory, particularly $1 trillion or so in savings claimed by troop cuts in Iraq and Afghanistan over the coming decade. Reid countered that House Republicans claimed the same savings windfall when they passed their budget earlier this year.

FUBO!! No deals! Just cut, baby, cut!!
Which is why I think he believes his ace (the 14th Amendment) can be played soon. Tonight is the trial balloon. I bet he's going to try and come out "bold" and "strong" and start ordering Congress on what to do with this "mess they created"; or else (his ace up his sleeve).
Focus groups start the focusing, lamestream starts laying down the cover; EO by weeks end.
Articles of Impeachment had better be lying in wait.

Alright! Alright! We won't raise taxes. Just give me my next deficit spending fix. Please! Please! Before I start climbing the walls and swinging from the refters

Obama addressing the nation again? He addresses us more often than the post office, but says nothing useful at any time.
I made a serious error. Al-Waleed’s Benz is covered in diamonds. Apologies to the Muslim Brotherhood, Aramco and the House of Saud.
That ground has a weird green tint to it. Lots of copper I suspect.
Scares me that the American people believe he actually has the power to order congress what to do. Of course, the press has been saying it since he was sworn in....in secrecy.
I think this is just a poorly written sentence. Journalism is a dying craft, you know. I believe the writer meant to say Hussein HAD demanded new tax revenue, but Reid's plan did not include Hussein's demands.
I propose an amendment to whatever plan is adopted: If the deficit goals (audited by independent non-government entity) and spending cuts are not met we hold special elections within 30 days for all Senate & House reps.
“”Obama addressing the nation again? He addresses us more often than the post office, but says nothing useful at any time.””
I think this twerp has withdrawal pains if he doesn’t have his mug on TV every day.
“”particularly $1 trillion or so in savings claimed by troop cuts in Iraq and Afghanistan over the coming decade.””
Charles Krauthammer said tonight that we might as well say we can cut $20 billion by not storming Normandy beaches again...
Where is that last pic?
