I usually agree with Sowell, but we part company here. He's right about the debt ceiling being ineffectual, but if it didn't exist, does anyone believe that there would be serious discussions going on about cutting spending and reining in the government?

If this "crisis" hadn't come up preventing the Obama Administration from simply borrowing more money, we would be well on our way to completely unrestrained spending . . . I can hear them now . . ."$2.7 Trillion? Hell make it $4. We'll worry about how we pay for it later."

Sowell, as is usual, hits the nail on the head.

Nevermind our deficit spending as far as the eye can see - we passed a “debt ceiling” that will cause a future Congress to hold to the fiscal sanity we reject. See how responsible we are - we passed a limit on just how crazy in debt we can be - while we spend like crazy!!!!

Similarly - the ‘cuts’ being proposed are all contingent upon a future Congress being fiscally sane - while full tilt wacko spending continues unabated. But see how responsible we are - we held a future Congress to drastic cuts in government spending - while we continue to spend like crazy!!!!!

continuing ... (2) SILVER:
The one thing that the national debt-ceiling has never done is to put a ceiling on the rising national debt.

Regardless of what it is supposed to do, what the national debt-ceiling actually does is enable any administration to get all the political benefits of runaway spending for the benefit of their favorite constituencies — and then invite the opposition party to share the blame, by either raising the national debt ceiling, or by voting for unpopular cutbacks in spending or increases in taxes.

The Obama administration is a classic example. When all its skyrocketing spending bills were being rushed through Congress without even being read, the Democrats had such overwhelming majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives that Republicans had all they could do to get a word in edgewise — even though their words had no chance of stopping, or even slowing down, the spending of trillions of dollars.

Now that the bill is coming due for all that spending and borrowing, Republicans are suddenly being invited in to share the blame for either raising the national debt ceiling or for whatever other unpopular measures will be legislated.

As usual Sowell nails it. Sometimes knowledge makes a bloody entrance.

“Those who say that the reckless spending and reckless borrowing of the Obama administration are the roads to ruin are absolutely right.”

BUMP! :(
