Rasmussen Reports ^ | July 25, 2011

Just over one-in-five Likely U.S. Voters (22%) now support government programs that give special treatment when hiring to women and minorities.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 63% oppose programs that give hiring preference to women and minorities. That’s up eight points from 55% a year ago. Fifteen percent (15%) are not sure about them.

When asked specifically about “affirmative action programs” in general without any further description, 26% of voters favor them, while 45% are opposed. Thirty percent (30%) are undecided.

A plurality (46%) of voters believes affirmative action programs discriminate against white men, but 31% disagree. Twenty-three percent (23%) are not sure.

Still, just 10% think affirmative action programs have been a success. Twenty-five percent (25%) rate them as a failure, while 60% feel they fall somewhere in between success and failure.

...

Male voters are much more critical of affirmative action programs than women are, although a majority (56%) of female voters also oppose government programs that give women and minorities hiring preference.

Seventy-four percent (74%) of black voters favor government programs that give special treatment to women and minorities. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of whites and 66% of voters of other races oppose these programs.

Why do GOP politicians run away from a popular issue where they would be in the right? Because the New York Times will say they are mean?

And it’s always been like this, yet as the OP says, the pols won’t dare mention the inherent unfairness. IMO the conservatives missed their chance back in the 70s and beyond by not raising Cain about this. This was an issue that whites and Jews (and now Asians) knew was unfair, and it should have been stopped in its tracts. Shame on Lewis Powell, Archibald Cox, etc in Bakke v. California, the lack of media and political outrage that should have followed. Just imagine how much higher the disapproval rate would be if the politicians and MSM had screamed and hollered about this like they do over “Gay marriage” and “hate crimes” and “racism” at every turn.

Since most of the don’t bring much to the table except racist chips on their shoulders, I don’t know why they’d be considered for special treatment.

A lot of businesses were re-organized and became women and/or minority businesses. Many of them were also “daddy’s business”.

This is BS you must always DO what is best for the Business.

Our industry has been hurt, with the hiring standards Lowered, while the rest of the world still does it right.

The world demands more of my son because he’s white. I disagree with that being the law of the land but ultimately he will prevale regardless. It’s because I demand more from him because he is white too! SMOKE THAT!

*ps.- not really. I demand more of all men. I just like pointing out the silliness of this issue.

Of course, the government has no right dictating to private companies who they can and cannot hire.

The fact that it does is what got us into this mess in the first place...

If miss first lady of affirmative action is so proud of here hairatage why does she spend thousands of our tax dollars turning it into white girl hair? Guess she does not need the reparations now.

All people applying for employment should be hired for their qualifications. PERIOD. I don’t care if they are white, black, yellow, orange, polka dotted, striped or checked.

Perhaps if we get back to hiring the way it used to be... we would have less problems in a lot of places.

If you are an engineer you don’t apply for a hair stylist job. You are NOT qualified.

If you are a hair stylist, you do not apply for the job of a computer expert. You are NOT qualified.

What is so hard about that? You apply for jobs you are qualified for. If you are NOT qualified and you STILL want that job then go back to school and work hard. Get your DEGREE that WILL qualify you and then you can go ahead and apply. That’s how it works.

So sick and tired of everyone whining and crying over every thing that doesn’t go their way. If you want something work hard for it and make it happen. If you work hard for it you will appreciate it better.

Was this poll commissioned by the Obama Cabal? It clearly explains for Ms. Jackson-Lee types that this country doesn’t think they are special enough. It also makes twisted arguments about how Obama got into office and why people are no longer embracing his attempt at a communist dictatorship. I am very leery of the conclusions that are often tied to these poll.
Do I think everybody ought to be on the same level when they apply for a job. Absolutely. Have I as a white male ever been discriminated against in hiring. Absolutely.

A lot of businesses were re-organized and became women and/or minority businesses.

I quit my last position when one of those company's became the prime contractor. Most of those companies (IMO) are simply opportunisitc fly-by-night operators whose main objective is to gain a piece of the pie. The female/minority/disabled vet owned tags are purely political. Many have no idea how to conduct the contracts they bid on.
