Where Have You Gone, Roger Ebert?
Big Hollywood ^ | September 7, 2010 | Lawrence Meyers

Posted on 07/24/2011 5:33:56 PM PDT by EveningStar

It breaks my heart to write this article. Roger Ebert has been a part of my love for cinema since I was eleven years old. When I was in the hospital for two months at age 19, I devoured his entire book of movie reviews...

Nevertheless, I don’t know the man. I only know his words. Yet I have to wonder if the physical and mental trauma Roger has endured has taken a toll on his mind. He always seemed apolitical to me. He just wrote great movie reviews. However, he started a political journal on his website in the past year. It’s full of the same clap-trap expected from those on the Left: false premises, poorly constructed arguments, and replies to comments which dodge legitimate challenges...

Was going to say that this is old news as far as Ebert’s political views are concerned. He’s been like this for over two decades.

>>>>>He always seemed apolitical to me.

Ebert has always been a Hollywood liberal and is not afraid to speak out.

He might seem apolitical only to a Hollywood writer - he's always been a flaming pinko.

Never read his political blog, but his reviews have become nonsensical and bizarre since around the time he left the TV program.

I agree. Even before the surgery, he was a hateful person. Now he’s really “off” his rocker and more spiteful than before.

As if I’m going to take the movie advice of some clown that recommended that we vote for John Kerry. Two thumbs down, Roger.

He watched Mark Steyn go from critic to full blown political commentator, but didn't realize he lacked the mental brilliance to pull it off.

A lot of people who are associated with the entertainment industry experience feelings of angst because what they do is fluff, make-believe, dress-up, not anything like essential for life, or health, or security, or anything.

As they grow older, this feeling of disquiet grows stronger and more unpleasant.

In the case of actors and actresses it's even more unpleasant than it is to characters like Roger Ebert (and Frank Rich) because they do their jobs whilst reading words placed in their mouths by writers who are smarter then they are, who (at least in some cases) have something to say. Actors are entirely superficial. They are living mannequins. They aren't hired for their brains, or their wit, or their courage, or their character, or anything of any real, lasting importance. They're hired for their looks, and that's all. As they age, they'll be forgotten.

Liberalism is a soothing balm for these unpleasant sensations. Liberalism encompasses countless noble-sounding platitudes. In fact, noble platitudes comprise pretty much the entire philosophical foundation of liberalism.

Is your career dying? Are your looks not turning heads anymore?

Stand on a soapbox for some advocacy organization and spout deep-sounding thoughts and you may get a second wind. It's too attractive a proposition to resist, at least for many.

Critics like Ebert and Rich are smarter -- and less good-looing -- than the stars they critique. As they age, it dawns on them that, when they're gone, they will be utterly forgotten. They've never done anything other than write about other people who are doing things and saying things written for them to do and say. The entire sum total of their creative output will have been for the purpose of helping people figure out what to do on a Friday night.

At some point, the urge comes upon them to do something that will be remembered, something that relates to the real world in some way. Rather than rave about the wonders of Cameron or Ben or Jake or Keira, they can rave about the wonders of Barack or Michelle or Nancy or Al, and go to bed at night dreaming of not being forgotten someday.

Could be. Per wikipedia

"... He has been friends with, and at one time dated, Oprah Winfrey ..."

WTH? Ebert’s always been a partisan shill. Oh, and I think he wrote porno scripts before settling in as a hack reviewer.

Look up “naive” in the dictionary and there is a picture of Lawrence Meyers.

I presume you do not think the screenplay for 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls' suffices for his immortality?

What do you expect from a guy (Ebert) who thinks our republic is a “democracy”?
