A Concord state representative's email to Republican colleagues at the State House about her Army training is causing national controversy this morning. In the email July 21, State Rep. Lynne Blankenbeker, R-Concord, the city's only GOP rep., described some of the training she was getting at Fort Dix, before she ships off to Afghanistan later this year. Blankenbeker, who is a Naval Reservist nurse, said she was learning how to drive a hum vee for convoys, both day and night, as well as weapons training. Blankenbeker wrote: "Today I got to be the gunner which was fun. The .50cal is quite a gun! I was never ascared (sic) of the unions but they better not F#%k with me again!!! Just saying."

A Nurse going to be driving a Humvee in convoy duty. That is absolute BS. What a waste for an RN. She needs to be taking care of the wounded and not driving convoy duty or being a gunner. Stupid Army!!!
Thanks for your legislative service! I have a higher regard for men and women of integrity and respect for the property and honor of citizens in that hard duty than just about any other duty a citizen might take on.
Even great heroes like Washington and Boone found it very difficult. It is! But without men and women fierce to maintain integrity and honesty in those offices — while being political — it falls to the venal and corrupt.
Could translate into peeing on the union manual. Sort of their holy grail.

everybody should be able to man every weapon and drive the vehicles they ride in. If they're attacked and driver or others are disabled it would really suck to be stuck with nobody up on the .50 or able to drive the vehicle when you might need to do both.

You are correct in your assesment, but the article indicates that driving and being a gunner on convoy duty will be one of her major responsibilities, which is what I call stupid. I should not be surprised, as I have seen this many times in my 21 year military career. Your expertise is in one area and the military assigns you to a billet that has no bearing to what duty you are best able to perform. Maybe they will make doctors gunners on the hunvees next.
I was in the National Guard for many years. Field artillery, M-198 towed howitzers. The unit I had been in was deployed to Iraq in 2003. As artillerymen? Nope. MPs. When they got there, they were set up right beside a unit of M-198s just like the ones the had left in the armory back home. Stupid army indeed.

WRONG!! We had nurses, medics and other so-called non-combatants driving in Iraq simply because we had no choice - not enough bodies to do every damn thing. Besides, if the crap hits the fan and they are a passenger going to one of the many outposts, they better be ready to become a combatant or very dead. In that environment, there is no such thing as regard for the red cross. One of the smartest moves the Army, my Army, ever made was to train everybody to be ready at a moment's notice.
