Smiley and West Take Obama Critique on the Road (Poverty Tour)
AP via CBS News ^ | Friday, July 22, 2011 | Jesse Washington

Black activists Cornel West and Tavis Smiley are planning a 15-city "Poverty Tour" to bring attention to the needy and to what they say are the failings of President Barack Obama.

West, a Princeton University professor, and Smiley, host of a PBS talk show, expect to begin the bus trip Aug. 5 at a Native American reservation in Wisconsin. With visits to soup kitchens, housing projects, farms, families and low-wage workers, they say they hope to create momentum for large-scale job creation programs and put poverty on the 2012 election agenda.

Although their tour does not have a specific racial focus, "you can't ignore that black people are catching the most hell in this recession," Smiley said.

Mary Frances Berry, a University of Pennsylvania history professor and former chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, said she has noticed more black frustration with Obama "in the barbershop, on the street with people. And among my own relatives."

"Everybody likes Obama in the African-American community," Berry said. "But when they see the unemployment numbers, they have friends and relatives getting put out in the street, they don't have jobs and can't find jobs, everyone starts trying to make excuses — Obama can't do anything by himself, he can't get Congress to go along."

"But after they say that over and over again and it gets worse — and it is getting worse — you get some mumblings and grumblings."

On their bus trip, Smiley and West will travel through Hayward, Eau Claire and Madison, Wis.; Milwaukee; Chicago's South Side; Joliet and Pembroke, Ill.; Lima, Ohio; Charleston, West Virginia; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Birmingham, Ala.; Columbus and Clarksdale, Miss.; and finish in Memphis.

I was a fan of Cornell West in the old days, in the same way I was a fan of Jimmy Swaggart, Don Lapre, Robert Tilton, and numerous other frauds and mountebanks.

From the headline I thought maybe Tavis Smiley and Allen West were going to be doing a modern day Lincoln-Douglas tour. I’d buy a ticket for that; but C. West and Smiley would be a waste of time..

Hustlers both of em.

When they admit that the way for the black community to prosper is to have intact families consisting of a mother and father, to have at least one parent in the workforce, to value education and respect for oneself and others, then they will be worth listening to.

I’m getting tired of paying for second, third, and fourth generation welfare families. Obviously, welfare is not the best way to handle the situation. I don’t know what the answer is, but obviously, welfare isn’t it,

Sad, but true!!! American Blacks have been destroyed by POTUS Obama. Obama, my Black friends, is an avowed Marxist. He does not give a hoot about you, one iota!!! And...he is not “one of you”!!! He never has felt what you have gone through. I would suggest that you broom him right now, big time, but....since I am a realist at heart, I will keep my mouth shut and let you good folks decide your own fate. Both the world and the nation will not take well and kind to your undying support of this America destroyer and....when the USA goes down, you Black Americans go down with it!!! The point is: You folks are not African Americans, you are just as fully American as most of the rest of us!!! Believing the jive jibberish coming from total failure POTUS Obama means tough times for you for many years to come. Again, broom Obama now, or go down with him!!!

This is the official position of the entire Democrat Party. Excuses.

We should give everyone the degree of their choice (no attendance required) and then give the unemployed their own PBS talk show. That will solve unemployment, right? Oh, and make the minimum wage $200 an hour so we will all be rich. These things are so simple when you live in fantasy land.

One of the few worthwhile provisions I am aware of in Obamacare is free birth control incentives for welfare mothers. I have no problem with women getting onto more effective methods like IUD and implants that they wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise. Almost all plans currently, even Medicaid, cover prescription contraceptives. Premiums will creep up - but family planning, like all preventative care/medicine, does nothing but save money in the long run. If they don’t take it up front and the behavior continues, a cut in benefits should do the trick.

Might as well go to the beginning, where the government began killing people with handouts.

It is still amazing after all these years that people whose only job is to sit around and think big things still don't get it. If people receive handouts long enough that is all they will remember how to do.

One thing that might be an incentive is for the government to quit paying more money to them for each new child they bring into the world.

I agree. Although most of these pregnancies are unplanned and it is only the kids that are going to end up suffering for it unfortunately.

I disagree that the pregnancies are unplanned. Back when LBJ started the nonsense of paying women (who gave a kickback to the “fathers”) more money for each child they produced, they made babies born out of wedlock a way of life and a meal ticket for those who thought they had found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Fewer jobs = more poverty.

We have the most anti-corporate and anti-jobs president I’ve ever known so it is no surprise to anyone that poverty abounds. The solution is not to tax “the rich”, which is the only Democrat answer, but to deregulate businesses and implement pro-growth strategies. That will create jobs which will create income which will reduce poverty.

Now, of course, the freeloader class doesn’t want to here this because it means they have to actually work to escape poverty but, folks, this is how it’s done in a capitalist society.

If you want something else, I suggest you swim to Havana.
